Multiple Vulnerabilities in Apache Tomcat (Oracle October 2011)

1. Overview:

New Critical Patch Updates or Security Alerts have been issued by Oracle regarding vulnerabilities in Apache Tomcat.

A Directory traversal vulnerability in Apache Tomcat 5.5.0 through 5.5.28 and 6.0.0 through 6.0.20 allows remote attackers to delete work-directory files via directory traversal sequences in a WAR filename, as demonstrated by the ...war filename. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2009-2902 to this issue.

A Directory traversal vulnerability in Apache Tomcat 5.5.0 through 5.5.28 and 6.0.0 through 6.0.20 allows remote attackers to create or overwrite arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in an entry in a WAR file, as demonstrated by a ../../bin/catalina.bat entry. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2009-2693 to this issue.

Apache Tomcat 5.5.0 through 5.5.29 and 6.0.0 through 6.0.26 might allow remote attackers to discover the server's hostname or IP address by sending a request for a resource that requires (1) BASIC or (2) DIGEST authentication, and then reading the realm field in the WWW-Authenticate header in the reply. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2010-1157 to this issue.

Apache Tomcat 5.5.0 through 5.5.29, 6.0.0 through 6.0.27, and 7.0.0 beta does not properly handle an invalid Transfer-Encoding header, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application outage) or obtain sensitive information via a crafted header that interferes with "recycling of a buffer." The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2010-2227 to this issue.

2. Avaya System Products using a Solaris Operating System with affected packages installed:

Some Avaya system products are delivered with a Solaris Operating System. Actions to be taken on these products are described below.

Recommended Actions:
Avaya strongly recommends that customers follow networking and security best practices by implementing firewalls, ACLs, physical security or other appropriate access restrictions. Though Avaya believes such restrictions should always be in place, risk to Avaya products and the surrounding network from this potential vulnerability may be mitigated by ensuring these practices are implemented until such time as an Avaya provided product update or the recommended Avaya action is applied. Further restrictions as deemed necessary based on the customer's security policies may be required during this interim period, but customers should not modify the System Product operating system or application unless the change is approved by Avaya. Making changes that are not approved may void the Avaya product service contract.
