1. Overview:

Texinfo is a documentation format from the GNU project that produces documentation in many formats suitable for online and/or offline viewing.

The texindex command that comes with Texinfo was found to contain a buffer overflow flaw that could lead texindex to crash or possibly execute arbitrary code as the user running texindex when opening a specially constructed Texinfo file. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) assigned the name CVE-2006-4810 to this issue.

The texindex command from Texinfo was found to contain a flaw in the way it creates temporary files. Through this flaw, a local user could use texindex to overwrite files the user running texindex has write permissions to. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) assigned the name CVE-2005-3011 to this issue.

3. Avaya Software-Only Products:

Avaya software-only products operate on general-purpose operating systems. Occasionally vulnerabilities may be discovered in the underlying operating system or applications that come with the operating system. These vulnerabilities often do not impact the software-only product directly but may threaten the integrity of the underlying platform.

In the case of this advisory Avaya software-only products are not affected by the vulnerability directly but the underlying Linux platform may be. Customers should determine on which Linux operating system the product was installed and then follow that vendors guidance.

Recommended Actions:
Avaya recommends that customers follow recommended actions supplied by RedHat Linux or remove the affected package.
