krb5 security update (RHSA-2007-0095)

Original Release Date: April 13, 2007
Last Revised: April 13, 2007
Number: ASA-2007-143
Risk Level: None
Advisory Version: 1.0
Advisory Status: Final

1. Overview:

Kerberos is an authentication mechanism which uses symmetric keys to allow authentication between clients and servers.

A flaw was found in the username handling of the MIT krb5 telnet daemon (telnetd). An attacker with access to the telnet port of a vulnerable system could bypass password requirements and login as any user, including super-user. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2007-0956 to this issue.

Kerberized telnet (krb5 telnet) is not enabled by default on any Avaya products running Red Hat Linux, and they are therefore not vulnerable to this issue.

Several buffer overflows have been reported in Kerberos KDC and the kadmin server daemon. An attacker with access to KDC could exploit this bug to run arbitrary code as the KDC or kadmin server processes. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2007-0957 to this issue.

Kerberos KDC and the kadmin server daemon are not enabled on any Avaya products running Red Hat Linux, and are therefore not vulnerable to this issue.

A double-free flaw was found in the GSSAPI library used by the kadmin server daemon. An authenticated attacker could potentially exploit this issue to cause a denial of service. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2007-1216 to this issue.

Kadmin and krb5-libs must both be installed to exploit this issue. Although krb5-libs is installed on some Avaya systems, kadmin is not installed on any Avaya systems.

More information about these vulnerabilities can be found in the security advisory issued by RedHat Linux:

2. Avaya System Products with vulnerable versions of krb5 installed: None

3. Avaya Software-Only Products:

Avaya software-only products operate on general-purpose operating systems. Occasionally vulnerabilities may be discovered in the underlying operating system or applications that come with the operating system. These vulnerabilities often do not impact the software-only product directly but may threaten the integrity of the underlying platform.

In the case of this advisory Avaya software-only products are not affected by the vulnerability directly but the underlying Linux platform may be. Customers should determine on which Linux operating system the product was installed and then follow that vendor's guidance.

4. Software-Only Products:

Product: Affected Version(s): Risk Level: Actions:
CVLAN All None Depending on the Operating System provided by customers, the affected package may be installed on the underlying Operating System supporting the CVLAN application. The CVLAN application does not require the software described in this advisory.
Avaya Integrated Management Suite(IMS) All None Depending on the Operating System provided by customers, the affected package may be installed on the underlying Operating System supporting the IMS application. The IMS application does not require the software described in this advisory.

Recommended Actions:
Avaya recommends that customers follow recommended actions supplied by RedHat Linux or remove the affected package.
