Number: ASA-2007-324

Advisory Version: 3.0
Advisory Status: Interim

1. Overview:

X.org is a community based, open source version of the X Window System. X.org provides the underlying graphical system that window managers and user environments such as GNOME, KDE and XFCE are run on.

A vulnerability has been reported in the execution of X.org xfs startup scripts. A local attacker could potentially exploit this vulnerability to escalate their privileges on a system. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project has assigned the name CVE-2007-3103 to this issue.

Avaya messaging products do not allow access to the command line interface (cli) or any X windows for any local users, either of which would be required to successfully exploit this vulnerability. As such, Avaya has rated this vulnerability as a risk level Low.

More information about these vulnerabilities can be found in the security advisory issued by RedHat Linux:

3. Avaya Software-Only Products:

Avaya software-only products operate on general-purpose operating systems. Occasionally vulnerabilities may be discovered in the underlying operating system or applications that come with the operating system. These vulnerabilities often do not impact the software-only product directly but may threaten the integrity of the underlying platform.

In the case of this advisory Avaya software-only products are not affected by the vulnerability directly but the underlying Linux platform may be. Customers should determine on which Linux operating system the product was installed and then follow that vendor's guidance.
