PAM security and bug fix update (RHSA-2007-0465)

Original Release Date: July 31, 2007
Last Revised: January 8, 2008
Number: ASA-2007-325
Risk Level: Low
Advisory Version: 2.0
Advisory Status: Final

1. Overview:

The Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM) provide a way for administrators to create and change authentication policies without major changes to the programs that handle authentication.

A vulnerability has been discovered which could allow an attacker to damage recordable CD drives. PAM has been changed to disallow access to the vulnerable files. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2004-0813 to this issue.

A vulnerability has been reported in the way that PAM_console sets console device permissions. Some console devices could retain ownership of the console after logging out. This could result in information leakage to an unauthorized user. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2007-1716 to this issue.

More information about these vulnerabilities can be found in the security advisory issued by RedHat Linux:
