Samba provides file and printer sharing services between Windows and Linux/UNIX environments.
A buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported relating to the way Samba creates NetBIOS replies. In configurations where the Samba server is configured to run as a WINS server, an attacker could potentially cause the Samba server to crash or execute arbitrary code. No Avaya products are configured by default to run as a WINS server, and are therefore not affected by this vulnerability. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2007-5398 to this issue.
A heap-based buffer overflow has been reported in the way Samba authenticates users. An unauthenticated attacker could exploit this vulnerability to potentially cause the Samba server to crash. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2007-4572 to this issue.
A vulnerability has been reported in the way Samba assigns group IDs in certain conditions, which could result in Samba users incorrectly being assigned a group ID of 0. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2007-4138 to this issue.

Avaya software-only products operate on general-purpose operating systems. Occasionally vulnerabilities may be discovered in the underlying operating system or applications that come with the operating system. These vulnerabilities often do not impact the software-only product directly but may threaten the integrity of the underlying platform.
In the case of this advisory Avaya software-only products are not affected by the vulnerability directly but the underlying Linux platform may be. Customers should determine on which Linux operating system the product was installed and then follow that vendor's guidance.
