postgresql security update (RHSA-2008-0040)

Original Release Date: February 4, 2008
Last Revised: February 4, 2008
Number: ASA-2008-052
Risk Level: None
Advisory Version: 1.0
Advisory Status: Final

1. Overview:

PostgreSQL is an open-source relational database system.

A number of vulnerabilities have been discovered in the PostgreSQL regular expression engine. An authenticated attacker could potentially exploit these vulnerabilities to cause the PostgreSQL server to crash, enter an infinite loop, or utilize large amounts of CPU and memory, creating a Denial of Service (DoS) condition. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the names CVE-2007-4769, CVE-2007-4772 and CVE-2007-6067 to these issues.

A vulnerability has been found in PostgreSQL which could allow an authenticated attacker to create an index function that would be executed with super user (su) privileges during certain database maintenance activities. This issue constitutes a privilege escalation attack. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2007-6600 to this issue.

A privilege escalation vulnerability has been discovered in the PostgreSQL Database Link library (dblink). An authenticated attacker could exploit the dblink to potentially gain escalated privileges in certain configurations. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the names CVE-2007-3278 and CVE-2007-6601 to this issue.

This advisory is specific to the versions of PostgreSQL shipped with the Red Hat Application Stack (RHAS). No Avaya system products are vulnerable, as RHAS versions of PostgreSQL are not installed by default.

More information about these vulnerabilities can be found in the security advisory issued by RedHat Linux:

2. Avaya System Products with RHAS versions of PostgreSQL installed: None

3. Avaya Software-Only Products:

Avaya software-only products operate on general-purpose operating systems. Occasionally vulnerabilities may be discovered in the underlying operating system or applications that come with the operating system. These vulnerabilities often do not impact the software-only product directly but may threaten the integrity of the underlying platform.

In the case of this advisory Avaya software-only products are not affected by the vulnerability directly but the underlying Linux platform may be. Customers should determine on which Linux operating system the product was installed and then follow that vendor's guidance.

Product: Actions:
CVLAN Depending on the Operating System provided by customers, the affected package may be installed on the underlying Operating System supporting the CVLAN application.
Avaya Integrated Management Suite (IMS) Depending on the Operating System provided by customers, the affected package may be installed on the underlying Operating System supporting the IMS application.
Voice Portal Depending on the Operating System provided by customers, the affected package may be installed on the underlying Operating System supporting the Voice Portal application.

Recommended Actions:
In the event that the affected package is installed, Avaya recommends that customers follow recommended actions supplied by RedHat Linux.
