kernel security and bug fix update (RHSA-2008-0508)

Original Release Date: July 9, 2008
Last Revised: June 22, 2009
Number: ASA-2008-287
Risk Level: Medium
Advisory Version: 5.0
Advisory Status: Interim

1. Overview:

The kernel packages contain the Linux kernel, the core of any Linux operating system.

These updated packages fix the following security issues:

A local unprivileged user could potentially view sensitive data due to a security flaw found in the Linux kernel memory copy routines, when running on certain AMD64 systems. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2008-2729 to this issue.

Due to a race condition discovered in the Linux kernel process-tracing system call, ptrace, a local unprivileged user could use this flaw to cause a denial of service (kernel hang). The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2008-2365 to this issue.

A deficiency discovered in the Linux kernel 32-bit and 64-bit emulation could allow a local unprivileged user to prepare and run a specially crafted binary, which would use this deficiency to leak uninitialized and potentially sensitive data. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2008-0598 to this issue.

It was discovered that the Linux kernel handled string operations in the opposite way to the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC). This could allow a local unprivileged user to cause memory corruption. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2008-1367 to this issue.

More information about these vulnerabilities can be found in the security advisory issued by RedHat Linux:

Recommended Actions:
For all vulnerable system products, Avaya recommends that customers restrict local and network access to the server. This restriction should be enforced through the use of physical security, firewalls, ACLs, VPNs, and other generally-accepted networking practices until such time as an update becomes available and can be installed.

3. Avaya Software-Only Products:

Avaya software-only products operate on general-purpose operating systems. Occasionally vulnerabilities may be discovered in the underlying operating system or applications that come with the operating system. These vulnerabilities often do not impact the software-only product directly but may threaten the integrity of the underlying platform.

In the case of this advisory Avaya software-only products are not affected by the vulnerability directly but the underlying Linux platform may be. Customers should determine on which Linux operating system the product was installed and then follow that vendor's guidance.

Product: Actions:
CVLAN Depending on the Operating System provided by customers, the affected package may be installed on the underlying Operating System supporting the CVLAN application.
