Original Release Date: July 25, 2008
Last Revised: July 25, 2008
Number: ASA-2008-314
Risk Level: None
Advisory Version: 1.0
Advisory Status: Final

1. Overview:

Mozilla Thunderbird is a standalone mail and newsgroup client and was found to contain the following issues:

  • Malformed JavaScript or HTML mail content could cause Thunderbird to crash or potentially execute arbitrary code as the user running Thunderbird.
  • A flaw was found in the way malformed HTML content is displayed, which could potentially trick a Thunderbird user into surrendering sensitive information.
  • Local file disclosure flaws were found that could cause Thunderbird to reveal the contents of a local file to a remote attacker.
  • A malformed .properties file could enable a malicious extension to read uninitialized memory, possibly leaking sensitive data to the extension.
  • A flaw was found that could allow an attacker to run arbitrary JavaScript under permissions of the user running Thunderbird.
  • An information display flaw for self-signed certificates could allow the user to mistakenly extend trust to an unknown site.
  • The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the following names to these issues:

    CVE-2008-2801, CVE-2008-2802, CVE-2008-2803, CVE-2008-2785, CVE-2008-2798, CVE-2008-2799, CVE-2008-2811, CVE-2008-2800, CVE-2008-2805, CVE-2008-2810, CVE-2008-2807, CVE-2008-2808, and CVE-2008-2809.

No Avaya system products are vulnerable, as Thunderbird is not installed by default.

More information about these vulnerabilities can be found in the security advisory issued by RedHat Linux:

Avaya software-only products operate on general-purpose operating systems. Occasionally vulnerabilities may be discovered in the underlying operating system or applications that come with the operating system. These vulnerabilities often do not impact the software-only product directly but may threaten the integrity of the underlying platform.

In the case of this advisory Avaya software-only products are not affected by the vulnerability directly but the underlying Linux platform may be. Customers should determine on which Linux operating system the product was installed and then follow that vendor's guidance.
