1. Overview:

The IBM 1.6.0 Java release includes the IBM Java 2 Runtime Environment and the IBM Java 2 Software Development Kit.

A flaw was found in the Java Management Extensions (JMX) management agent. When local monitoring is enabled, remote attackers could use this flaw to perform illegal operations. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2008-3103 to this issue.

Several flaws involving the handling of unsigned applets were found. A remote attacker could misuse an unsigned applet in order to connect to services on the host running the applet. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2008-3104 to this issue.

Several flaws in the Java API for XML Web Services (JAX-WS) client and the JAX-WS service implementation were found. A remote attacker who could cause malicious XML to be processed by an application could access URLs, or cause a denial of service. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the names CVE-2008-3105 and CVE-2008-3106 to these issues.

Several flaws within the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) scripting support were found. A remote attacker could grant an untrusted applet extended privileges, such as reading and writing local files, executing local programs, or querying the sensitive data of other applets. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the names CVE-2008-3109 and CVE-2008-3110 to these issues.

A flaw in Java Web Start was found. Using an untrusted Java Web Start application, a remote attacker could create or delete arbitrary files with the permissions of the user running the untrusted application. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2008-3112 to this issue.

A flaw in Java Web Start when processing untrusted applications was found. An attacker could use this flaw to acquire sensitive information, such as the location of the cache. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2008-3114 to this issue.

No Avaya system products are vulnerable, as java-1.6.0-ibm is not installed by default.

Avaya software-only products operate on general-purpose operating systems. Occasionally vulnerabilities may be discovered in the underlying operating system or applications that come with the operating system. These vulnerabilities often do not impact the software-only product directly but may threaten the integrity of the underlying platform.

In the case of this advisory Avaya software-only products are not affected by the vulnerability directly but the underlying Linux platform may be. Customers should determine on which Linux operating system the product was installed and then follow that vendor's guidance.

In the event that the affected package is installed, Avaya recommends that customers follow recommended actions supplied by RedHat Linux.
