apr-util security update (RHSA-2009-1107)

Original Release Date: June 23, 2009
Last Revised: June 23, 2009
Number: ASA-2009-244
Risk Level: Low
Advisory Version: 1.0
Advisory Status: Interim

1. Overview:

The apr-util is a utility library used with the Apache Portable Runtime (APR). It aims to provide a free library of C data structures and routines. This library contains additional utility interfaces for APR; including support for XML, LDAP, database interfaces, URI parsing, and more.

An off-by-one overflow flaw was found in the way apr-util processed a variable list of arguments. An attacker could provide a specially-crafted string as input for the formatted output conversion routine, which could, on big-endian platforms, potentially lead to the disclosure of sensitive information or a denial of service (application crash). The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2009-1956 to this issue.

Note: The CVE-2009-1956 flaw only affects big-endian platforms, such as the IBM S/390 and PowerPC. It does not affect users using the apr-util package on little-endian platforms, due to their different organization of byte ordering used to represent particular data.

A denial of service flaw was found in the apr-util Extensible Markup Language (XML) parser. A remote attacker could create a specially-crafted XML document that would cause excessive memory consumption when processed by the XML decoding engine. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2009-1955 to this issue.

A heap-based underwrite flaw was found in the way apr-util created compiled forms of particular search patterns. An attacker could formulate a specially-crafted search keyword, that would overwrite arbitrary heap memory locations when processed by the pattern preparation engine. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2009-0023 to this issue.

More information about these vulnerabilities can be found in the security advisory issued by RedHat Linux:

Recommended Actions:
Avaya strongly recommends that customers follow networking and security best practices by implementing firewalls, ACLs, physical security or other appropriate access restrictions. Though Avaya believes such restrictions should always be in place; risk to Avaya's product and the surrounding network from this potential vulnerability may be mitigated by ensuring these practices are implemented until such time as a product update is available. Further restrictions as deemed necessary based on the customer's security policies may be required during this interim period.

3. Avaya Software-Only Products:

Avaya software-only products operate on general-purpose operating systems. Occasionally vulnerabilities may be discovered in the underlying operating system or applications that come with the operating system. These vulnerabilities often do not impact the software-only product directly but may threaten the integrity of the underlying platform.

In the case of this advisory Avaya software-only products are not affected by the vulnerability directly but the underlying Linux platform may be. Customers should determine on which Linux operating system the product was installed and then follow that vendor's guidance.
