kernel security and bug fix update (RHSA-2013-1166)

Original Release Date: September 19, 2013
Last Revised: July 22, 2016
Number: ASA-2013-446
Risk Level: Medium
Advisory Version: 9.0
Advisory Status: Final

1. Overview:

The kernel packages contain the Linux kernel, the core of any Linux operating system.

This update fixes the following security issues:

A flaw was found in the way the Linux kernel's Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) implementation handled duplicate cookies. If a local user queried SCTP connection information at the same time a remote attacker has initialized a crafted SCTP connection to the system, it could trigger a NULL pointer dereference, causing the system to crash. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2013-2206 to this issue.

It was found that the fix for CVE-2012-3552 released via RHSA-2012:1540 introduced an invalid free flaw in the Linux kernel's TCP/IP protocol suite implementation. A local, unprivileged user could use this flaw to corrupt kernel memory via crafted sendmsg() calls, allowing them to cause a denial of service or, potentially, escalate their privileges on the system. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2013-2224 to this issue.

An invalid pointer dereference flaw was found in the Linux kernel's TCP/IP protocol suite implementation. A local, unprivileged user could use this flaw to crash the system or, potentially, escalate their privileges on the system by using sendmsg() with an IPv6 socket connected to an IPv4 destination. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2013-2232 to this issue.

Information leak flaws in the Linux kernel could allow a privileged, local user to leak kernel memory to user-space. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the names CVE-2013-2164, CVE-2013-2147, CVE-2013-2234 and CVE-2013-2237 to these issues.

More information about these vulnerabilities can be found in the security advisory issued by Red Hat:

Recommended Actions for System Products:
Avaya strongly recommends following the networking and security best practices by implementing firewalls, ACLs, physical security or other appropriate access restrictions. Though Avaya believes such restrictions should always be in place, risk to Avaya products and the surrounding network from this potential vulnerability may be mitigated by ensuring these practices are implemented until such time as an Avaya provided product update or the recommended Avaya action is applied. Further restrictions as deemed necessary based on the customer's security policies may be required during this interim period, but the System Product operating system or application should not be modified unless the change is approved by Avaya. Making changes that are not approved may void the Avaya product service contract.

Mitigating Factors:

When determining risk, Avaya takes into account many factors as outlined by Avaya's Security Vulnerability Classification Policy. The following table describes factors that mitigate the risk of specific vulnerabilities for affected Avaya products:

Vulnerability Mitigating Factors
CVE-2013-2206
This is a Low risk for all products as SCTP is not used by default.
CVE-2013-2147
CVE-2013-2164
CVE-2013-2234
CVE-2013-2237
These are a Low risk for all products as privileged account access is required.
CVE-2013-2224
CVE-2013-2232
These are a Low risk for CM, CS1000, Conferencing, Conferencing SE, Meeting Exchange, Messaging and SIP Enablement Services privileged account access would be required.
These are a Medium risk for all other listed products due to the potential for privilege escalation or Denial of Service.

3. Avaya Software-Only Products:

Avaya software-only products operate on general-purpose operating systems. Occasionally vulnerabilities may be discovered in the underlying operating system or applications that come with the operating system. These vulnerabilities often do not impact the software-only product directly but may threaten the integrity of the underlying platform.

In the case of this advisory Avaya software-only products are not affected by the vulnerability directly but the underlying Linux platform may be. Customers should determine on which Linux operating system the product was installed and then follow that vendor's guidance.
