perl security update (RHSA-2013-0685)

Original Release Date: June 27, 2013
Last Revised: August 3, 2016
Number: ASA-2013-277
Risk Level: Medium
Advisory Version: 5.0
Advisory Status: Final

1. Overview:

Perl is a high-level programming language commonly used for system administration utilities and web programming.

A heap overflow flaw was found in Perl. If a Perl application allowed user input to control the count argument of the string repeat operator, an attacker could cause the application to crash or, potentially, execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running the application. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2012-5195 to this issue.

A denial of service flaw was found in the way Perl's rehashing code implementation, responsible for recalculation of hash keys and redistribution of hash content, handled certain input. If an attacker supplied specially-crafted input to be used as hash keys by a Perl application, it could cause excessive memory consumption. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2013-1667 to this issue.

It was found that the Perl CGI module, used to handle Common Gateway Interface requests and responses, incorrectly sanitized the values for Set-Cookie and P3P headers. If a Perl application using the CGI module reused cookies values and accepted untrusted input from web browsers, a remote attacker could use this flaw to alter member items of the cookie or add new items. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2012-5526 to this issue.

It was found that the Perl Locale::Maketext module, used to localize Perl applications, did not properly handle backslashes or fully-qualified method names. An attacker could possibly use this flaw to execute arbitrary Perl code with the privileges of a Perl application that uses untrusted Locale::Maketext templates. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2012-6329 to this issue.

More information about these vulnerabilities can be found in the security advisory issued by Red Hat:

Recommended Actions for System Products:
Avaya strongly recommends following the networking and security best practices by implementing firewalls, ACLs, physical security or other appropriate access restrictions. Though Avaya believes such restrictions should always be in place, risk to Avaya products and the surrounding network from this potential vulnerability may be mitigated by ensuring these practices are implemented until such time as an Avaya provided product update or the recommended Avaya action is applied. Further restrictions as deemed necessary based on the customer's security policies may be required during this interim period, but the System Product operating system or application should not be modified unless the change is approved by Avaya. Making changes that are not approved may void the Avaya product service contract.

Mitigating Factors:

When determining risk, Avaya takes into account many factors as outlined by Avaya's Security Vulnerability Classification Policy. The following table describes factors that mitigate the risk of specific vulnerabilities for affected Avaya products:

Vulnerability Mitigating Factors
CVE-2012-5526
The risk is rated Low for all products because CGI module is neither loaded nor used.
CVE-2012-6329
The risk is rated Low for all products because maketext function is not used.
CVE-2012-5195
CVE-2013-1667
The risk is rated Low for CS 1000, Conferencing, Conferencing Standard Edition, CM, EP, Messaging and Meeting Exchange because local users, who can exploit this vulnerability are all privileged users.
The risk is rated Low for AES, Presence, SM, SMGR and SP because perl scripts are limited to internal system use and can be executed only by privileged users.
The risk is rated Medium for AS5300, CMS, IQ, IP Office, IPOAS, one-X CES and CMUS because of the potential for an application crash by a local user.

3. Avaya Software-Only Products:

Avaya software-only products operate on general-purpose operating systems. Occasionally vulnerabilities may be discovered in the underlying operating system or applications that come with the operating system. These vulnerabilities often do not impact the software-only product directly but may threaten the integrity of the underlying platform.

In the case of this advisory Avaya software-only products are not affected by the vulnerability directly but the underlying Linux platform may be. Customers should determine on which Linux operating system the product was installed and then follow that vendor's guidance.
