Installing ADAP

This topic tells you how to install ADAP software on your PC. Installation consists of the following three tasks, described in detail later in this topic:

    1. Determine that the required hardware is in place and configured properly.
    2. Understand how the ADAP directories are organized on your PC.
    3. Perform the installation. Installation procedures are the same whether you install ADAP for the first time or upgrade from an earlier version of ADAP.

Installation Requirements

Before you install the ADAP software, check that your PC system consists of the following:

  • An IBM-compatible PC with:
    • A minimum of 640 KB of RAM
    • A 3.5-inch 1.44-MB floppy disk drive
    • One fixed disk (hard drive) with a minimum of 40 MB of storage
    • One Hayes-compatible modem, either internal or external
    • MS-DOS

Note: If you have AUDIX Call Detail Recording (CDR), see the AUDIX Call Detail Recording Package, 585-305-506, for the CDR hardware requirements.

  • A PC–compatible, parallel port printer for printing text files.

Recommended Hardware Configurations

Your PC must be connected to the voice mail system through one of the following configurations:

  • (INTUITY AUDIX R1-5 or LX only) Directly, with a Group 311 RS-232 cable that is connected from your PC to a Group 350 null modem cable, which in turn is connected to:
    • Either Port A on the INTUITY AUDIX system or the local administration terminal (LAT) connector on the back of the AUDIX system
    • An RS-232 cable that cannot exceed 50 feet
    • Through a switch that uses a Hayes-compatible modem
    • Through a switch that uses Modular Processor Data Module (MPDM)
  • (IA770 INTUITY AUDIX) A PC with a Hayes-compatible RS-232 modem that is connected to a COM port or USB port. The modem is then connected either to the public or private telephone network. See the IA 770 ADAP Hardware Configuration.

Likewise, the S8300 must also have a Hayes-compatible RS-232 modem connected to a USB port. The modem is then connected to either the public or private telephone network, normally through a port on an MM711Analog Media Module. Administer the analog port for the modem as a 2500 phone set. See the IA 770 ADAP Hardware Configuration.

ADAP Directory Structure

When you install the ADAP software for INTUITY AUDIX, the default directory that is used by the ADAP setup software is INT_ADAP, unless the ADAPROOT environment variable is set otherwise. After installation is complete, these directories contain the appropriate ADAP software. Since both directories contain programs with the same names, the PATH environment variable indicates which of the two directories is to be used when you execute the ADAP software.

You must create the machine directories (<machine1>, <machine2>, and so on) that will contain the data that you retrieve from each voice mail machine by using ADAP. If you are working with more than one voice mail machine, you need to create a directory that corresponds to each machine.

ADAP Diskette Contents

Each diskette contains a readme file that lists the ADAP files and directories that are contained on that diskette. To display the contents of the readme file, insert the diskette into drive A and type a:readme at the DOS prompt. (If you use a drive other than A, enter the letter of that drive instead.)

The ADAP software is contained on the 3-1/2-inch diskettes.

ADAP Installation (for PCs that do not run Windows NT4 or Windows 2000)

Installation procedures are the same whether you are installing ADAP for the first time or upgrading from an earlier version of the ADAP software.

Install ADAP Software

To install ADAP, you need to do the following:

  1. Insert the AUDIX Administration and Data Acquisition Software, Disk 1 into your floppy drive. (If you use a diskette drive other than drive A, enter the letter for that drive instead.)
  2. Open a DOS window from your desktop. If there is no DOS menu item, do the following:

    • Click the Start button on your desktop.

The system displays the Start menu.

    • Click Run.

The system displays the Run dialog box.

    • Type cmd or command and press Enter.

  3. The system displays the DOS window.

  4. At the DOS prompt, type a: to switch to the floppy drive and press Enter.

The system displays the a: prompt.

  5. Type setup and press Enter.

The Setup For AUDIX PC Software menu is displayed.

  6. Press a to select Install ADAP Command Line Software.

The Install ADAP Command Line Software screen is displayed.

  7. Press i to select Install.

Messages that describe installation progress are displayed. When installation of the disk is finished, if there are more disks to be instaledl you are prompted to insert the next disk. Each disk takes about a minute to install.

  8. Insert the next disk and press any key to continue.

  9. Repeat Step 7 for each disk that is requested by the Setup program.

When installation is finished, an Installation Complete message is displayed.

  10. Press any key to continue.

NOTE: ADAP software is installed by default to C:\PCIFCE or C:\INT_ADAP. If you want to install the software on a different subdirectory or drive, insert the following environment variable definition in your autoexec.bat file and reboot your PC:

    SET ADAPROOT=<drive>:\<directory>
(where <drive> is the drive letter and <directory> is the directory path name)
NOTE: For a non-Windows 2000 or NT system, you will need to check the config.sys and autoexec.bat files. For a Windows 2000 or NT system, you will need to create new config.sys and autoexec.bat files.

Check config.sys and autoexec.bat Files

The installation automatically modifies data in the config.sys and autoexec.bat files. Complete the following steps to ensure that these changes were made:

  1. At the DOS prompt, type config.sys to display the contents of the config.sys file.

  2. Check for the rs232 device line:

    device=c:\pcifce\ex_rs232.bin

This line identifies the device driver for communicating with the voice mail system. If this line is not present, use your text editor to add it to the file. (If you changed the ADAP software subdirectory to a name other than PCIFCE or INT_ADAP, the name you changed it to is displayed in the file.)

  3. Check for the following device line, which tells ADAP how to write things to the screen:

    device=c:\dos\ansi.sys

  4. At the DOS prompt, type autoexec.bat to display the contents of the autoexec.bat file.

  5. Check for the line that begins with PATH= and validate the following:
  6. c:\pcifce or c:\int_adap

  7. If the above entries are not included in your autoexec.bat file, use your text editor to add them to the file.
  8. If you made any changes in the previous steps, reboot your system.

ADAP Installation on Windows NT4 or Windows 2000

This section provides instructions for installing and configuring the ADAP software onto a Windows PC with Windows NT4 or Windows 2000 operating systems. These instructions are generally applicable to any of the MS operating systems that employ Program Information Files (also known as PIFs).

Installation

  1. Use Windows Notepad to edit your C:\config.sys file. Add the following line:
device = c:\winnt\system32\ansi.sys
  1. Save the changes to the config.sys file.
  2. Insert the ADAP distribution diskette into your floppy disk drive. Navigate and read the README file for instructions.
  3. Open a DOS window to use the DOS command line.
  4. If you cannot find a menu for a DOS session, click the Start menu and select Run. Type cmd in the dialog box and then press Enter.

    A DOS window is displayed.

  5. Type a: to switch to the floppy disk drive or type in whatever letter represents the floppy disk drive on the computer.
  6. Press Enter.
  7. Type setup and then press Enter.

You are now inside ADAP's installation program. The default installation places programs into the C:\INT_ADAP directory.

  8. Enter your floppy disk drive letter name or press Enter to default to drive a:.

The Setup For AUDIX PC Software menu is displayed.

  9. Press a to select Install ADAP Command Line Software.

The Install ADAP Command Line Software screen is displayed.

  10. Press i to select Install.

Messages that describe installation progress are displayed. When installation of the disk is finished, if there are more disks to be installed, you are prompted to insert the next disk. Each disk takes about a minute to install.

  11. Insert the next disk and press any key to continue.

  12. Repeat Step 11 for each disk that is requested by the Setup program.

When installation is finished, an Installation Complete message is displayed.
  13. Press any key to continue.

The Setup for AUDIX PC Software menu is displayed.
  14. Type q to quit the program and then close the DOS window.

Create New config.sys and autoexec.bat files

  1. You can use the Windows Notepad applet to create a file named AUTOEXEC.BAT and insert the following environment variable definitions:

    set PATH=%PATH%;C:\INT_ADAP
    set ADAPROOT=C:\INT_ADAP

  2. Save your AUTOEXEC.BAT file in the C:\INT_ADAP directory.
  3. Create a file named CONFIG.SYS and insert the following:

    device = C:\WINNT\system32\ansi.sys
    device = C:\INT_ADAP\ex_rs232.bin

  4. Save your CONFIG.SYS file in the C:\INT_ADAP directory.
  5. Use the Search or Find feature to locate an existing PIF file. Search for *.PIF files on the local C: hard disk.

The files must be smaller that 100 KB. For Windows 2000, the files are generally located in C:\WINNT\PIF, which is probably in a hidden folder.

  6. Select an existing PIF file, create a copy of it, and place the copy on your desktop.

The copied MS-DOS PIF file becomes a shortcut on your desktop.

  7. On your desktop, select and right-click the copy of your PIF file and select the Rename option.
  8. Rename the copied PIF as ADAP.
  9. Select and right-click the new ADAP shortcut and select the Properties option.

The ADAP Properties dialog box is displayed.

  10. Select the General tab and change the name to ADAP if ADAP does not already appear.
  11. Select the Program tab and enter the following in the fields:

    In the first line: ADAP
    Cmd line: C:\WINNT\system32\CMD.EXE
    Working: C:\INT_ADAP
    Shortcut key: None
    Run: Normal Window

  12. Select the Close on exit check box.
  13. Click the Advanced or Windows NT button.

The Windows PIF Settings dialog box is displayed.

  14. Enter the following in the Windows PIF Settings dialog box:

    Autoexec filename: C:\INT_ADAP\autoexec.bat
    Config filename: C:\INT_ADAP\CONFIG.SYS

  15. Click OK twice to close the dialog boxes.
  16. Reboot your system to activate the changes.
