Chapter 4: Polling Routers

Polling Overview

The CNA system can poll your edge routers continually for information about each link defined in your CNA configuration. Data which can be gathered includes the following:

Polling is done through SNMP messages. This requires that you add a block of SNMP configuration commands--which provide contact information required to communicate with an SNMP agent on a remote device--to your CNA system’s running configuration. The CNA link-monitor process will use the information in this configuration block when it polls the SNMP agent on the remote device.

You will need a separate configuration block for each SNMP agent that is to be polled.

Each service provider link configured on your CNA system needs to be associated with an SNMP configuration block, though multiple service provider links can share the same configuration block as long as the links are configured on the same edge router.

Use the following configuration commands to create the SNMP configuration block:

community

polling snmp-agent

snmp-agent-ip-address

port

retries

timeout

Once the block has been configured, you will need to associate it with a service provider link defined elsewhere in the CNA configuration.

To associate the link with an agent for link usage information and BGP and interface status polling, add the following commands to the link-definition configuration block:

polling snmp-agent

polling interface-ip-address

To associate the link with an agent to be polled exclusively for BGP status, add the following commands to the link-definition configuration block:

polling bgp-status snmp-agent

polling bgp-status interface-ip-address

You can have both types of agents configured on the same link--one agent for link usage and interface status, the other for BGP status.

If you don’t configure a BGP-exclusive agent, the same agent will be used for all three.

To poll for link-usage data, add the following commands to the link-definition configuration block:

polling usage interval

polling usage on

polling usage unknown-threshold

usage-reporting billing-period

usage-reporting cost

usage-reporting formula

usage-reporting percentile

To poll for BGP peering status, add the following commands to the link-definition configuration block:

polling bgp-status on

polling bgp-status interval

polling bgp-status unknown-threshold

To poll for service provider link status, add the following commands to the link-definition configuration block:

polling interface-status interval

polling interface-status on

polling interface-status down-threshold

Use the show statistics command with dmaker as the argument to see currently configured values.
