snmptrapd

The snmptrapd service runs on the management module. This service is responsible for managing SNMP traps.

The service has a restart routine which you can specify when executing the medic call command.

The CNA system monitors resource usage, voltage levels, and temperatures on each module. When acceptable limits are exceeded, SNMP traps are thrown.

The first time that usage of a monitored resource exceeds a maximum threshold, the service will send a trap. When usage falls below the minimum threshold, the service will send a “clear” trap and the service will be reset to allow another trap to be sent when the maximum threshold is again exceeded.

This maximum/minimum threshold scheme is designed to avoid excessive posting of SNMP traps as usage fluctuates near the maximum threshold.

For example, with the management module’s CPU usage thresholds at their default values of 50 and 80, the system will send a trap when usage goes above 80%. Without a minimum threshold, if usage alternated between 80 and 81for a period of time, you would receive a new SNMP trap each time usage broke 80%.

With a minimum threshold at 50, however, the system will send only one trap the first time usage breaks 80 and then no more until a “clear” trap is sent when usage falls below 50.

The CNA system supports up to 10 snmptrap receiver hosts.
