Managing the Backup Media

This topic contains the following information:

About the Backup Media

The INTUITY AUDIX LX system uses rewritable compact disc (CD-RW) media to back up data. In the event of a system failure, the data stored on the media is used to restore the INTUITY AUDIX LX system to an operational state.

The CD-RW media used to back up data holds approximately 650-MB of data and supports writing speeds greater than 4x. Avaya recommends using CD-RW media labeled as "4x–10x compatible". If a backup is attempted using a CD-RW medium that supports writing speeds less than or equal to 4x, for example, 1x–4x or 4x, the backup will fail.

Alternating the Backup Media

To ensure that acceptable backup data is available when needed, do not use only one backup CD-RW medium. It is recommended that you alternate between at least two CD-RW media for unattended backups. Additional media can be used to implement a longer cycle. For example, you could alternate backups among seven backup media, each one labeled with one day of the week.

After an unattended backup is complete or an attended backup medium is full, label the backup media with the current date or day of the week, depending on your backup cycle, along with the backup data type. Then store the backup medium in a secure location. A second backup medium must then be inserted into the drive in anticipation for the next unattended backup or to complete an attended backup if the attended backup requires more than one backup medium.

Replacing the Backup Media

It is recommended that you replace the backup media every 12 months. When labeling a backup CD-RW medium for the first time, write the replacement date on the backup medium to help identify when it needs to be replaced.

Viewing the Contents of the Backup Media

The following procedure explains how to view the contents of the backup medium.

To view the contents of the backup medium:

  1. Start at the Administration main menu and select:
  2. Utilities
Backup and Restore View Attributes of Backup Media

The system displays the View Attributes of Backup Media page, which contains the following information:

    • The CD-RW medium number, and the name of the machine
    • The date and time of the backup
    • A list of the data types that were backed up
    • A list of the packages installed on the system at the time of backup
  3. Click Return to Main to return to the Administration main menu.

Ejecting the Backup Media

There are two ways to eject the backup medium from the drive, either by manually pushing the round eject button on the front of the drive or by using the web-based administration pages.

Ejecting the Backup Media by Pushing the Button on the Front of the CD-RW Drive

To eject the backup medium from the drive:

  • Press the round button on the lower right side of the CD-RW drive.

Ejecting the Backup Media by Using the Web-based Administration Pages

Occasionally, you cannot eject the backup medium manually, possibly for one of the following reasons:

  • You are at a remote location.
  • The system is using the backup medium.
  • The backup medium is stuck in the drive for some other reason.

If you are working from a remote location, do not unnecessarily eject the backup medium.

To eject the backup medium by using the web-based administration pages:

  1. Start at the Administration main menu and select:
  2. Utilities
    Eject CD

The system ejects the backup medium and displays the Eject Media page.

  1. Click Return to Main to return to the Administration main menu.
