Overview of Activating Internet Messaging
There are important issues to consider before
beginning to activate the Internet Messaging feature. Check the Planning
and Security sections and confirm
that these issues have been addressed.
The Internet Messaging feature is already
installed when your new Avaya INTUITY system arrives. However, a number of
steps are required to have the feature work properly for your network and
subscribers, including administering the Internet Messaging screens and making
sure that the feature is working properly. After these steps are completed,
subscribers can send and receive messages.
This topic describes information to gather
and procedures to complete for the activation process, including:
Administering Internet Messaging
Administration changes on the Internet Messaging screens are required so that the system operates properly in your location. After becoming familiar with the operation of Internet Messaging and the type of traffic your subscribers generate, you can use these screens to improve the management of the feature's operation.
To administer Internet Messaging:
- Start at the Messaging Administration main menu and select under IMAP/SMTP Administration:
The
system displays the General Options and Settings screen.
Note:
Internet Messaging places default values
in many fields to simplify initial setup.
As usage patterns become clear, you can
adjust the fields that have defaults to
the most appropriate value. |
-
Check the contents of each field for the correct
entry.
Leave
the values on this screen unchanged unless the
traffic volume, subscriber requests, or other
system requirements dictate otherwise.
-
If you are enabling POP3 or IMAP4 access, select the appropriate POP3 or IMAP4options.
Security Risk!
If you enable POP3 message access, password
integrity may be compromised during each
login. Therefore, Avaya recommends that
you administer the access for use only behind
a corporate firewall, and that you disable
mailbox access from outside the firewall.
See Security
for more information. |
If
this field is enabled, Avaya is not responsible
for any theft of service that may result.
- If you want to
allow the POP3 or IMAP4 users to use the system's directory
as their email directory, select the appropriate LDAP options.
Security Risk!
If you enable LDAP directory access, email
addresses of each subscriber are viewable.
Therefore, Avaya recommends that you administer
LDAP for use only behind a corporate firewall,
and that access to the LDAP port be blocked
from external users. |
- Verify the setting for the Put RFC822 headers into text? field.
If the field is set to No, then HTML headers will not be played over the phone with the e-mail message body.
If the field is set to Yes, then HTML headers will be played over the phone with the e-mail message body.
Note: You can view the message, and HTML headers and body from Message Manager. |
- Go to the Messaging Administration main menu and select under IMAP/SMTP Administration:
The system displays the
Mail Options screen.
- Select the appropriate options and then click . Use the Help button for additional information about the available settings.
Testing the
Operation of Internet Messaging
After INTUITY AUDIX and Internet Messaging are administered, run the following tests to confirm that all network connections are established and that the system is operating properly.
- Start with the Messaging Administration main menu and select under IMAP/SMTP Administration:
The system displays the System Status screen.
- Check the
Internet Message status:
field. The status should be Running.
Note: For an explanation of how to run the test or of the test results, click the Help button at the bottom of each Internet Messaging screen. |
- Go to the Messaging Administration main menu and select under Diagnostics:
.
The system displays the Name Server Lookup Test screen.
- Run the Name Server Lookup test for the INTUITY AUDIX and mail gateway. Test each host name or IP address. Use the name format of hostname.domain. For example, use the name intuity.dr.avaya.com, not just intuity.
This test determines whether a system can be looked up through the domain name servers assigned on the TCP/IP Networking screen. If domains can be looked up, messages can be delivered to them.
- Go to the Messaging Administration main menu and select under Diagnostics:
.
The system displays the Test SMTP Connection screen.
- Test each host name or IP address.
This test validates the mail protocol connection between this INTUITY AUDIX and another machine.
- Go to the Messaging Administration main menu and select under Diagnostics:
or
The system displays the Test POP3 or IMAP4 Connection screen.
- Run the POP3 or IMAP4 Connection test for the INTUITY AUDIX. Test each host name or IP address.
This test calls a network host using TCP/IP to determine whether the host's POP3 or IMAP4 interface is running. If the connection works, POP3 communication through Internet Messaging is working.
Run the IMAP4 connection test. Test each address.
- Go to the Messaging Administration main menu and select under Diagnostics:
The system displays the Test Mail Delivery screen.
- Run the Mail Delivery test for a known INTUITY AUDIX extension and password, and a valid email address.
This test validates whether the mail system is functioning by sending a message through the INTUITY AUDIX system to an existing extension. Go to the extension and verify that the test message was delivered.
- Go to the Messaging Administration main menu and select under Logs:
.
The system displays the IMAP/SMTP Messaging Logs page.
- Check each log for the messaging status in each delivery process. You can select the log you want to view from Logs. .
