Packet-based (VoIP) operations

With the Voice over IP (VoIP) feature, voice data is transported in small packets using the same Internet Protocol (IP) as corporate LANs and the Internet. In a VoIP configuration, a DEFINITY or MultiVantage system is always present. For more information, see Voice over IP feature.

The VoIP subsystem may be placed on the corporate LAN (the same network that is used for email and document transfer). However, a dedicated network is generally used to connect the switch to the Avaya IR system. The main reason for using a dedicated network is to guarantee voice quality without using complex bandwidth management technologies.

In the VoIP configuration, the switch is the gateway between the public and corporate telephony network and the Avaya IR system or systems. The figure that follows shows a VoIP configuration.
