Installing Oracle on a Sun Fire V240 or 280R

The Sun Fire V240 and 280R are sold without a video card or monitor. To install Oracle 9i and later on a V240 or 280R system, an X-windows environment is required. You can use any X-windows tool, such as Exceed, from a client machine, such as a PC or a Conversant V8/R9 system on the network.

Install Oracle as follows:

  1. Find a machine on the network that has an X-windows tool, such as Exceed, to be the client machine.
  2. Start an X-windows session on the client machine.
  3. Telnet to the Avaya IR system.
  4. Export the command DISPLAY="remote machine's IP address":0.0
  5. Test that the DISPLAY variable is set correctly by typing /usr/openwin/bin/xlock and verify that the clock displays on the screen of the client system.

If the clock is not displayed correctly, check your DISPLAY variable. If an error message indicates that the connection was refused, run the command xhost + on the remote machine that $DISPLAY is set to.

  6. Follow the instructions in the Oracle documentation to install Oracle from the client. See the Avaya IR online help for additional configuration guidelines.
