Solaris 10 OS and having an external tape drive connected

To restore a system with Solaris 10 OS, having an external tape drive connected, from a full backup, complete the steps described in the following table:

The system displays messages indicating that it is attempting to boot the operating system from the hard disk.

At any point during or after the attempted boot process, display the open boot (ok) prompt by either:

  • Pressing Stop-A from the Sun console

Open the CD-ROM drive bay. Insert the CD-ROM labeled AVAYA IR R 2.0 Recovery Software CD. Close the CD-ROM drive bay.

The system displays messages indicating that it is resetting itself and rebooting from the CD-ROM.

This prompt appears on the Sun Fire 280R, Sun Fire V240, and the Sun Blade 150 if the Sun keyboard is not connected to the computer's USB port.

Choose the terminal type you want to use and press Enter.

The Solaris Installation Program

The Solaris installation program is divided into a series of short sections where you'll be prompted to provide information for the installation. At the end of each section, you'll be able to change the selections you've made before continuing.

About navigation...
- The mouse cannot be used
- If your keyboard does not have function keys, or they do not respond, press ESC; the legend at the bottom of the screen will change to show the ESC keys to use for navigation.

Press F2 to acknowledge the screen.

Identify This System

On the next screens, you must identify this system as networked or non-networked, and set the default time zone and date/time.

If this system is networked, the software will try to find the information it needs to identify your system; you will be prompted to supply any information it cannot find.

To begin identifying this system, press F2.

Network Connectivity

Specify Yes if the system is connected to the network by one of the Solaris or vendor network/communication Ethernet cards that are supported on the

Solaris CD.

See your hardware documentation for the current list of supported cards.

Specify No if the system is connected to a network/communication card that is not supported on the Solaris CD, and follow the instructions listed under Help.

Configure Multiple Network Interfaces

Multiple network interfaces have been detected on this system. Specify all of the network interfaces you want to configure.

Note: You must choose at least one interface to configure.

NOTE: DHCP support will not be enabled, if selected, until after the system reboots.

Host Name for bge0

Enter the host name which identifies this system on the network. The name must be unique within your domain; creating a duplicate host name will cause problems on the network after you install Solaris.

A host name must have at least one character; it can contain letters, digits, and minus signs (-).

IP Address for bge0

Enter the Internet Protocol (IP) address for this network interface. It must be unique and follow your site's address conventions, or a system/network failure could result.

IP addresses contain four sets of numbers separated by periods (for example

129.200.9.1).

Select whether your system is part of a subnet and press F2.

If you choose Yes, the system prompts you for the subnet mask. In this case, enter the subnet mask and press F2.

Netmask for bge0

On this screen you must specify the netmask of your subnet. A default netmask is shown; do not accept the default unless you are sure it is correct for your subnet. A netmask must contain four sets of numbers separated by periods (for example 255.255.255.0).

IPv6 is not supported in this release.

After a short wait (approximately 30 seconds), the system displays the network information you entered similar to the example shown in the following row in this table.

Review the information to make sure it is accurate and press F2 to continue. If the information is not correct, press F4 and correct the information, starting with the Networked question.

While restoring the system, do not modify the host name and IP address of the system. Keeping the host name and IP address of the system the same, prevents problems with restoring licenses.

Configuring default router

Enter default router IP address (ex. 192.1.7.254) or 'none':

Enter the IP address of the default router (if applicable).

The system verifies the default router. This activity takes a few minutes.

After the system accepts your name service information, it displays a series of messages requesting information about the time zone for the system.

- Time Zone

On this screen you must specify your default time zone. You can specify a time zone in three ways: select one of the continents or oceans from the list, select other - offset from GMT, or other - specify time zone file.

To make a selection, use the arrow keys to highlight the option and press Return to mark it [X].

You are attempting to restore from tape. Please ensure that the tape drive is attached to the sytem. The backup utility provided with IR should have been used to create a full backup.

 

Specify the tape drive (with non rewinding option). For example,

/dev/rmt/Xn, where 'X' is the tape drive number (0-7). 'X' must be folowed by n.

For example, /dev/rmt/0n

Configuring default router

Set default network router IP address [y,n,?]

Enter Y for "yes."

Set Router IP Address (ex. 192.1.7.254 ):

Enter the IP address of the router.

If the router address is correct, enter Y for "yes."

On this screen you can create a root password.

A root password can contain any number of characters, but only the first eight characters in the password are significant. (For example, if you create `a1b2c3d4e5f6' as your rootpassword, you can use `a1b2c3d4' to gain root access.)

You will be prompted to type the root password twice; for security, the password will not be displayed on the screen as you type it.

> If you do not want a root password, press RETURN twice.

Avaya recommends that you create a root password.

If partial (incremental) backups were made after the full backup, restore them using the Web Administration interface.
