The installation technician administers Email
(Internet Messaging) when your Modular Messaging system
is initially installed. However, you might need to either enable
or disable or even possibly re-administer Internet Messaging after
your system has been installed.
To successfully administer Email (Internet Messaging), you need the Switch and messaging information
planning form that was completed when the system was initially installed. For
more information, see the System planning forms
in the Installation and Upgrades guide (pdf).
Administering Email (Internet Messaging) includes the following tasks:
Administering Internet Messaging options
To administer Email (Internet Messaging) options, complete the fields on the following pages:
- SMTP Options: Use this page to specify SMTP settings for Internet Messaging,
- Mail Options: Use this page to specify how email is managed and to define configuration information that is used in processing incoming and outgoing email.
For more information on completing the fields on these pages, click the field names or Help.
Administering ports for Internet Messaging
To administer ports for Internet Messaging:
- On the Administer System Attributes and Ports page, enable and disable the POP3, IMAP4, and LDAP SSL and non-SSL ports as appropriate for your system.
Security Risk!
If you enable non-SSL LDAP
access, your subscribers' email addresses might be harvested
by spammers. Therefore, it is recommended that you administer
the access for use only behind a corporate firewall, and
that you disable mailbox access from outside the firewall.
See Email (Internet Messaging)
security issues for more information.
If you enable non-SSL ports, Avaya is not
responsible for any theft of service that may result.
Note: Modular Messaging also supports the
STARTTLS protocol for IMAP4, POP3, and SMTP. Administrators
can enable IMAP4 access and inform subscribers to configure
their e-mail clients to use STARTTLS to get an SSL operation
over the standard IMAP4 port. The same applies to POP3 and
SMTP ports as well.
- Click Save.
Administering a Class-of-Service for the Postmaster Mailbox
To administer a Class-of-Service for the Postmaster Mailbox:
- On the Manage Classes-of-Service page, select the class-of-service to modify (such as class00).
- Click Edit the Selected COS.
- On the Edit a Class-of-Service page, set the Maximum Mailbox Size field to the maximum of 64 Mbytes.
- Scroll down to Subscriber Features and Services and
activate the following features:
- Set Message Waiting Indication Allowed to Yes.
- Set Record Mailbox Greeting to Yes.
- Set Outbound Fax Calls to Yes.
- Telephone User Interface: Select a telephone user interface
(TUI) for use by all the subscribers that are assigned
this class-of-service. The telephone user interface field
may not display on all systems and the choices may be
different depending on the Modular Messaging configuration.
- Set Restrict Client Access to No.
This will allow subscribers using this class-of-service
to access their mailboxes using the Avaya proprietary
clients such as Avaya Advanced Speech Access, Modular
Messaging Web Client, Telephone User Interface as well
as IMAP4 and POP3 standards-based clients including the
Client Add-in for Microsoft Outlook.
Important: The Restrict Client
Access control is overridden if the Privacy Enforcement
Level (PEL) value is set to Full.
The PEL setting is controlled using the Voice Mail
System Configuration (VMSC) program on the Messaging
Application Server (MAS). To view the PEL settings,
open the VMSC program on the MAS and double-click
the Messaging item on the VMSC tree.
- Adjust other feature values if necessary.
- Click Save.
Administering a Postmaster Mailbox
You must set up a postmaster mailbox on every Modular Messaging system for the system to function properly. The postmaster mailbox should have been set up when your system was installed. The postmaster mailbox should not be deleted and should be checked regularly (on a daily basis if possible).
To administer a Postmaster Mailbox:
- On the Manage Subscribers page, click Manage in the Local Subscribers row.
- On the Manage Local Subscribers page, if postmaster does not appear in the list of subscribers, click Add a New Subscriber. If postmaster is in the list of subscribers, select it and click Edit the Selected Subscriber.
- Use the information in the Switch and messaging
information planning form to complete the following fields on the
Add or Edit Local Subscriber page:
- In the Last Name field, type postmaster, use lower-case letters.
- Leave the First Name field blank.
- In the Password field, type the password for the postmaster mailbox.
- In the Mailbox Number field, type a valid telephone extension
number. Enter 3 to 10 digits as required by your dial plan.
- In the Numeric Address field, type an address that is unique among all the addresses in the messaging network. The numeric address can be identical to the Mailbox Number, or it can be different from the Mailbox Number. For example, you might prepend a 1 or the
area code to the Mailbox Number.
- In the Class Of Service field, select the class-of-service that you set up for special mailboxes.
For more information, click a field name or Help.
Note: The Email Handle field will be populated automatically when you save the information on this page. The value for the Email Handle field must be postmaster in lower-case letters. Any other email address causes an error.
- Click Save.
- On the Configure Subscriber Management page, in the System Mailboxes section, for the Internet Postmaster
Mailbox Number, type the extension for the mailbox number that
you entered in Step 3d when you set up the postmaster mailbox.
- Click Save.
