Testing the operation of Email (Internet Messaging)

After you administer Email (Internet Messaging), run the following tests to confirm that all network connections are established and that the feature is operating properly.

To test the operation of Internet Messaging:

  1. On the IMAP/SMTP Status page, check the Internet Messaging status field. The status should be Running.
  2. On the Send & Receive Packets To & From (PING) page, run the Ping test for all of the network routers, the MSS, and mail gateway. Test each host name or IP address.
  3. This test checks whether this and another system have physical connectivity and that each interface is running.

  4. On the Name Server Lookup Test page, run the Name Server Lookup test for the MSS and mail gateway. Test each host name or IP address. Use the name format of hostname.domain. For example, use the name mss.avaya.com, not just mss.
  5. This test determines whether a system can be looked up through the domain name servers assigned on the Configure Network Addressing page. If domains can be looked up, messages can be delivered to them.

  6. On the Test SMTP Connection page, run the SMTP Connection test for the MSS and mail gateway. Test each host name or IP address.
  7. This test validates the mail protocol connection between this MSS and another machine.

  8. On the Test POP3 Connection page, run the POP3 Connection test for the MSS. Test each host name or IP address.
  9. This test calls a network host using TCP/IP to determine whether the host's POP3 interface is running. If the connection works, POP3 communication through Internet Messaging is working.

  10. On the Test IMAP4 Connection page, run the IMAP4 Connection test for the MSS. Test each host name or IP address.

This test calls a network host using TCP/IP to determine whether the host's IMAP4 interface is running. If the connection works, IMAP4 communication through Internet Messaging is working.

  11. On the Test Mail Delivery page, run the Mail Delivery test for a known MSS extension and password, and a valid email address.
  12. This test validates whether the mail system is functioning by sending a message through the MSS system to an existing extension. Go to the extension and verify that the test message was delivered.

  13. On the IMAP/SMTP Logs page, check each log for the messaging status of each delivery process.
