When a local subscriber receives a call answer message, the Modular Messaging system attempts to match the sender's calling party number (CPN) to a subscriber in the database. If a match is found, the caller is identified as a subscriber and the local subscriber is offered call answer response options such as sending a reply message or dialing the caller. For more information, see Administering call answer response options for local subscribers.
To set up this capability for local subscribers, telephone number mapping must be enabled for the remote networked machine and, depending on the network dialing plan, telephone number mappings may have to be defined to transform the CPN. For example, telephone number mapping is needed if the remote Modular Messaging (or Network Messaging) system sends a 10-digit CPN but local subscribers can dial a 7-digit number to call the sender of a call answer message.
Telephone number mapping can be enabled when a new networked machine is added or when information for an existing networked machine is changed. You can administer a maximum of 100 telephone number mappings for each networked machine.
After you administer telephone number mappings, the system attempts to match a digit string (specified in the Map From field) to the beginning of a base number for each remote subscriber. If a match is found, the matching digits are replaced by the digits you specify (in the Map To field). This creates a telephone number that can be used by local subscribers to reply to or call the sender of a call answer message. If multiple Map From entries match a base number, the entry that matches the greatest number of digits is used.
The base number used depends on whether the Modular Messaging system receives the remote subscriber information from another Modular Messaging system or from a Message Networking system. If the Modular Messaging system receives the remote subscriber information from another Modular Messaging system, the base number is the PBX extension. If the Modular Messaging system receives the remote subscriber information from a Message Networking system, the telephone numbers administered on the Message Networking system are used as the base number.
To add telephone number mapping for a networked machine:
- On the Manage Networked Machines page, to add a new networked machine, click Add a New Networked Machine.
To change information for an existing networked machine, click Edit the Selected Networked Machine.
- On the Add Networked Machine page or the Edit Networked Machine page, in the Enable Telephone Number Mapping field, select yes.
Note: If you change the Enable Telephone Number Mapping field from yes to no, all defined mappings are removed from the database and the telephone numbers for all subscribers associated with that networked machine are set to null in the local Modular Messaging system database.
- In the Map From field, enter the digit string that is compared against the subscriber's base number.
- In the Map To field, enter the digit string that is prepended to the base number after the digits that match the Map From field are stripped.
- Click Add Mapping.
The new telephone number mapping is added.
- Repeat Steps 4 through 6 to add additional telephone number mappings.
- When you are finished adding telephone number mappings, click Save.
The new or changed information is saved and the system displays the Manage Networked Machines list.
