Logging in to the MSS

You can log in to the Message Storage Server (MSS) using any administered login (such as sa or vm). See Setting up administration accounts on the MSS for information about the system logins. The steps you use to log in depend on whether you are logging in from:

Caution!
The system allows more than one person to perform the same function on the same screen or page, for example, editing a subscriber's settings. If two people happen to be editing the same subscriber's settings, only the changes made by the person who saves the screen or page last are written to the database. However, if the first person deletes the subscriber, the second person who is editing the subscriber's settings will be unable to save any changes.

Logging in to the MSS from the console

To log in to the MSS from the console:

  1. Switch the monitor to show the MSS if necessary.
  2. Turn on the monitor.
  3. At the login prompt, log in to the MSS using the appropriate login and password.

The system displays the Messaging Administration main menu. See Using the MSS web-based administration interface for information on navigating the administration interface.

Logging in to the MSS from a web browser inside the firewall

To log in to the MSS from a web browser inside the firewall:

  1. Using a personal computer inside your intranet firewall, open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape.
  2. In the address field, enter one of the following:

where server is the name of your MSS and domain is your company's domain name. For example, http://mss1.avaya.com.

where ipaddress is the IP address of your MSS.

  3. Press Enter
  4. The MSS security notice page displays if you have not installed the Avaya root certificate.

  5. Click Continue.
  6. Enter your login in the Username field and click Login.
  7. Enter the password for your login in the Password field and click Login.
  8. The system logs you in and displays the Messaging Administration main menu.

Adding the MSS as a trusted site

You must access the MSS from the MAS to do certain administration tasks. For example, for security purposes, you cannot Launch Subscriber Options on behalf of a subscriber unless you access the MSS through an Avaya MAS.

Increased security on the Avaya MAS requires you to set up the MSS as a trusted site if you access the MSS from the MAS. You must do this task the first time you try to access the MSS from an MAS.

To set up the MSS as a trusted site using Internet Explorer:

  1. On the Avaya MAS, open Internet Explorer.
  2. If the system displays a warning that the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration is enabled, click OK.
  3. In the Internet Explorer main window, select Tools > Internet Options.
  4. In the Internet Options window, click the Security tab.
  5. Click Trusted Sites so the item is highlighted, and then click the Sites button.
  6. In the Trusted sites window:
    1. Verify that the checkbox is clear to Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.
    2. Under Add this Web site to the zone, type the full corporate computer name of the MSS and click Add. For example, type mss1.avaya.com.
    3. Tip: Do not enter http:// or https:// in front of the computer name, or the browser might not find the server automatically.

    4. Click OK to close the Trusted sites window.
  7. Click OK to close the Internet Options window.
  8. In the address field of the Internet Explorer main window, type the full corporate computer name of the MSS. For example, type mss1.avaya.com and press Enter.
  9. Continue logging in to the MSS, as described in Logging in to the MSS from a web browser inside the firewall.
  10. Note: If you try to access the MSS from a remote personal computer and see a warning message that content from the requested web page is blocked, use this procedure to set up the MSS as a trusted site.

    1. In the window warning you about the blocked page, click Add.
    2. In the Trusted sites window, verify that the Add this Web site to the zone field shows the correct address for the MSS.
    3. Click Add, and then close this window.
    4. Continue logging in as usual.

Logging in to the MSS using a PPP connection

To access and log in to the MSS using a PPP connection from a remote personal computer:

  1. Using your remote personal computer, verify that your networked machine is connected to your MSS through the PPP connection.
  2. Open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape.
  3. In the web browser address field, enter http://ipaddress.

where ipaddress is the local IP address that you set up during installation.

  4. Press Enter
  5. The MSS security notice page displays.

  6. Click Continue.
  7. Enter your login in the Username field and click Login.

Note: Do not use the sappp login and password to log in to the system. The sappp login and password are only used to establish the PPP connection to the MSS from the remote personal computer.

  8. Enter the password for your login in the Password field and click Login.
  9. The system logs you in and displays the Messaging Administration main menu.

Important! After you have successfully logged in to the MSS through a PPP connection, do not make any changes to the Configure Modem/Terminal page or to the Configure PPP Users page. Changing the settings on these pages could terminate your PPP connection.

  10. When you are finished administering the MSS, log off the MSS and shut down the PPP connection on the remote personal computer. For information about logging out the MSS, see Logging out of the MSS.
