Managing the MSS backup media

This topic provides the following information about the backup media used to back up Modular Messaging system data:

If you are performing backups over the customer LAN, see Administering remote storage for MSS backups.

About the backup drive and media

To backup Modular Messaging system data to the DVD-RAM drive in an Avaya Message Storage Server (MSS), you must use DVD-RAM Type 2 or Type 4 Cartridge media. The DVD-RAM Type 2 medium holds approximately 4.7 GB of data. The DVD-RAM Type 4 medium holds approximately 9.4 GB of data. In the event of a system failure, the data stored on the media can be used to restore the system back to an operational state.

For more information about DVD-RAM media, such as care and storage instructions or for instructions on how to write protect or remove write protection, see the documentation that accompanies the media.

Alternating the backup media

To ensure that acceptable backup data is available when needed, do not use just one DVD-RAM medium for attended and unattended backups. It is recommended that you alternate between at least two media for unattended backups. Additional media can be used to implement a longer cycle. For example, you could alternate among seven media, each one labeled with one day of the week.

Ejecting the backup media

To eject the DVD-RAM backup medium:

  1. On the CD/DVD Unmount page, click Unmount.
  2. On the CD/DVD Eject page, click Eject.
  3. The system ejects the backup medium.
