Port priority

One prioritization scheme assigns priority based on the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) port numbers used by voice packets. The scheme gives network priority to packets from a port range. UDP is used to transport voice through the LAN because, unlike TCP, it is not connection-based. Because voice is sensitive to delay, it is better to drop packets rather than retransmit them. So, a connectionless protocol is preferable to a connection-based protocol. G700 Media Gateways allow defining any port range for voice priority. Routers and data switches can use these ports to distinguish priority traffic.
