1. Overview:

OpenLDAP is an open source LDAP suite (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) which contains applications and development tools.

Nss_ldap is a GNU module for OpenLDAP which allows for automated logins using files like /etc/passwd.

A vulnerability has been found in OpenLDAP and nss_ldap which under certain circumstances could cause an LDAP link to not be encrypted. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project has assigned the name CVE-2005-2069 to this issue.

A vulnerability has been found in the way certain OpenLDAP authentication schemes store hashed passwords. A remote attacker could potentially re-use a hashed password to gain access to a system. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project has assigned the name CVE-2004-0823 to this issue.

Recommended Actions:
For all system products which use vulnerable versions of openldap, Avaya recommends that customers restrict local and network access to the server. This restriction should be enforced through the use of physical security, firewalls, ACLs, VPNs, and other generally-accepted networking practices until such time as an update becomes available and can be installed.
