openssl security update (RHSA-2006-0695)

Original Release Date: October 12, 2006
Last Revised: July 24, 2008
Number: ASA-2006-220
Risk Level: Medium
Advisory Version: 3.0
Advisory Status: Final

1. Overview:

OpenSSL is an open source toolkit that implements the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) versions 2 and 3 protocols, the Transport Layer Security (TLS) version 1 protocol as well as a general use cryptography library.

A buffer overflow vulnerability was found in vulnerable versions of OpenSSL's SSL_get_shared_ciphers() function. A malicious user could cause this overflow condition by sending a specially crafted list of ciphers to applications linked to OpenSSL that make use of this function. Few programs are known to make use of this function and often times is only available when programs are built with debugging symbols. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2006-3738 to this issue.

OpenSSL's client code was found to contain a flaw when handling SSLv2 connections. A malicious server could possibly cause the client to crash when negotiating a connection. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2006-4343 to this issue.

OpenSSL's ability to parse ASN.1 formatted data structures was found to contain two Denial of Service (DoS) vulnerabilities. The first ASN.1 issue related to parsing of particular public key types, which could take excessive amounts of time to parse and cause a DoS. The second ASN.1 issue related to trying to parse invalid ASN.1 data structures, which would lead to an infinite loop condition consuming excessive amounts of system memory, potentially creating a DoS. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the names CVE-2006-2940 and CVE-2006-2937 respectively, to these issues.

More information about these vulnerabilities can be found in the security advisory issued by RedHat Linux:

2. Avaya System Products with openssl installed:

Product: Affected Version(s): Risk Level: Actions:
Avaya S87XX/S8500/S8300 All Medium Upgrade to Communication Manager 3.1.4 or later.
Avaya Intuity LX 1.x Medium Upgrade to Intuity LX 2.0 or later.
Avaya Messaging Storage Server All Medium Upgrade to MSS 3.1 or later.
Avaya Message Networking All Medium Upgrade to MN 3.1 or later.
Avaya CCS/SES 3.1.1 Medium Upgrade to SES 5.0 or later.

Recommended Actions:
For all system products which use vulnerable versions of openssl, Avaya recommends that customers restrict local and network access to the server. This restriction should be enforced through the use of physical security, firewalls, ACLs, VPNs, and other generally-accepted networking practices until such time as an update becomes available and can be installed.

3. Avaya Software-Only Products

Avaya software-only products operate on general-purpose operating systems. Occasionally vulnerabilities may be discovered in the underlying operating system or applications that come with the operating system. These vulnerabilities often do not impact the software-only product directly but may threaten the integrity of the underlying platform.

In the case of this advisory Avaya software-only products are not affected by the vulnerability directly but the underlying Linux platform may be. Customers should determine on which Linux operating system the product was installed and then follow that vendors guidance:

4. Software-Only Products:

Product: Affected Version(s): Risk Level: Actions:
Avaya Interactive Response(IR) All None Depending on the Operating System provided by customers, the affected package may be installed on the underlying Operating System supporting the IR application. The IR application does not require the software described in this advisory.
CVLAN All Medium See recommended actions below.
Avaya Integrated Management Suite(IMS) All Medium See recommended actions below.

Recommended Actions:
Avaya recommends that customers follow recommended actions supplied by the Operating System vendor (e.g. RedHat Linux).
