PCRE security update (RHSA-2007-1068)

Original Release Date: December 12, 2007
Last Revised: January 9, 2009
Number: ASA-2007-505
Risk Level: Medium
Advisory Version: 4.0
Advisory Status: Interim

1. Overview:

PCRE is a Perl-compatible regular expression library.

A number of vulnerabilities have been discovered in the way PCRE handles malformed regular expressions. An attacker could potentially exploit this vulnerability to run arbitrary code as the user running an application linked against PCRE, such as grep. This vulnerability could lead to privilege escalation in certain circumstances. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the names CVE-2 006-7225, CVE-2 006-7226, CVE-2 006-7228, CVE-2 006-7230 and CVE-2 007-1659 to these issues.

A number of Avaya products have the PCRE package installed. In certain systems, the PCRE vulnerability could potentially be exploited to escalate privilege. In these cases the risk level is listed below as Medium, in accordance with Avaya's Vulnerability Classification Policy.

This advisory is specific to the versions of PCRE installed on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL 4). Separate advisories will be issued for versions of PCRE on other RHEL platforms.

More information about these vulnerabilities can be found in the security advisory issued by RedHat Linux:

For all system products which use vulnerable versions of PCRE, Avaya recommends that customers restrict local and network access to the server. This restriction should be enforced through the use of physical security, firewalls, ACLs, VPNs, and other generally-accepted networking practices until such time as an update becomes available and can be installed.

Avaya software-only products operate on general-purpose operating systems. Occasionally vulnerabilities may be discovered in the underlying operating system or applications that come with the operating system. These vulnerabilities often do not impact the software-only product directly but may threaten the integrity of the underlying platform.
