Take a look at the parameter SET BAKLIGHTOFF in the 96xxsettings.txt (or 46xxsettings.txt).

It has the number of minutes it will take to go into the dark, as you called.
Mine is set for 2 hours...

Working as Design

This is working as designed. It works the same way as the 46xx ones. The other second port on the phone would work as a DHCP relay and it does not give your VPN's address.

Maybe this will help you: It would still show the extension, but requires the user to to type in the password.
What you can also do, is have the user use a USB stick to auto-login.

It has been such a long time I last used it, but remember to force the inet.d to reload its configuration (kill -1 inet.d, or something like that).
Then, try to log in using an user that is not root.
