Default Check serial cables with other Avaya/Nortel switches

Just my 2 cents worth: Try the serial cable with another of the customer's switches. Any of those that work, will work on this switch as well. If so, then you have eliminated the serial cable as the culprit.
Give that you have a good cable, reboot the switch to see whatever kind of POST it does come up with. It may be a hardware issue, then it may also be a software issue that a reset will cure. If you have control of whatever the switch configuration is supposed to be, or even what it ought to be, then a reset to factory default may be your only option if you don't have the correct username/password.
One minor detail: Remember that the username is usually RW in capital letters...
