Question L100 series headsets always muted on RJ9 SR connection to J-series or 96xx phones

Trying to get the new L129 / L139 headsets to work with 9608 or J169 / J179 phones with the quick-release connector and a QR-to-RJ9 adapter. I can press the headset button on the phone and get audio in the headset speaker, but it's one-way, the mic on the headset does not appear to work.

Is there another part, or additional configuration required here? The documentation says these headsets are compatible with those phones. Are the USB controllers required for the headset to work at all? If so, what is the purpose of the RQ-to-RJ9 connector?
