It is also worth to check if the Serial console is enabled on the switch. If you are able to Telnet to the switch.
command from the Global configuration mode #serial-console <unit 1-8> enable Also check the serial connection settings as suggested by fwilkepcs. |

Is this during boot up? If the switch is already up just press Ctrl + Y to bring up the CLI.
