We have go the steps from where phone can be cross-grade from H.323 to Open SIP. Here is the step-by-step guide. Please note that we can provide generic instructions but we do not officially support or walk through setting up local HTTP/HTTPS servers to cross-grade old H.323 PBX firmware.
Avaya J189 Firmware Conversion Guide (H.323 to Open SIP)
This process involves setting up a temporary local file server on a PC to push the Open SIP firmware to the phone.
Phase 1: Prerequisites & Downloads
Before starting, please ensure a laptop/PC and the Avaya J189 phone are plugged into the same local network router/switch. Then, download the following files onto the PC:
The Firmware: Download the official Avaya J100 SIP Firmware package (ZIP file) from
http://download.yeastar.com/YeastarSupport/Autopfiles/AvayaProvisioningFiles.zip.
Software will save to your Downloads section.
The Server Utility: Download HFS (HTTP File Server) from
https://rejetto.com/hfs/. It is a free, safe, single executable file that requires no installation.
Phase 2: Set Up the Temporary Local Server
Create a new folder on your PC Desktop and name it AvayaFirmware.
Extract the entire contents of the downloaded Avaya J100 SIP ZIP file directly into this new folder. (You should see files like J100Supgrade.txt inside it.)
Open the hfs.exe application. Important Windows Firewall Prompt: A popup will ask for network permissions. You must check the boxes for both Public and Private networks and click Allow Access. If you miss this, the phone will be blocked from connecting to your PC.
In the HFS window, select all the files inside your AvayaFirmware desktop folder and drag and drop them into the left-hand panel of HFS.
Look at the top of the HFS window. It will display a URL with an IP address (e.g., (
http://192.168.1.50). Note down that IP address; you will need it for the phone.
Once you extract that firmware package and mounts the files to HFS as shown in the guide, you just need to change the phone's protocol to SIP and input their PC's IP address. The phone will handle the rest. Details are in Phase 3 section.
Phase 3: Configure the J189 Phone
Now, move to the physical J189 handset:
Access the Admin Menu: Reboot the phone. While it is booting up, press the Admin softkey. (Alternatively, if the phone is already booted, press Mute, type 27238 (#CRAFT), and press #).
Change the Signaling Protocol:
Scroll down to Signaling (SIG) and press Select. Change the value from H.323 to SIP. Save the changes. If the phone reboots, let it boot and enter the Admin menu one more time (Mute + 27238 + #).
Point the Phone to your PC Server:
Inside the Admin menu, navigate to Addresses (Addr). Scroll to HTTP Server and enter the exact IP address of your PC that you copied from the HFS application. (Note: Use the * key on the keypad to enter a dot/period). Scroll to HTTPS Server and enter the same IP address. Save your settings and exit the menu.
Phase 4: Firmware Flash & Verification
The phone will automatically reboot and reach out to the PC. In the HFS application on the PC screen, you will see lines of text scrolling by, indicating the phone is actively downloading the files.
The phone screen will display "Downloading..." or "Updating software." Do not unplug the phone. It may restart 2 or 3 times during this process.
Once completed, the phone will boot into a standard Open SIP login screen. At this point, the conversion is complete, and you can proceed with standard Avaya Cloud Office (ACO) assisted provisioning using the phone's MAC address!
