Disabling unused network services

Network services are a frequent target of unauthorized access attempts. Any network service that is enabled may provide a potential mechanism for an unauthorized connection to be made to the system. For this reason, network services not needed by the Avaya IR system are disabled by default. If any of these services are needed in your operating environment, you can enable them.

Note:
The disabling of network services does not remove the need for a firewall.

You may also choose to disable services on your system that are not disabled by default. For example, you may wish to disable services such as telnet and ftp. To ensure that there are no unintentional effects on the operation of the system, you must test the system and applications prior to deployment on a live network.

Note:
The sendmail process, which uses the smtp service, is also disabled by default.

For more information on network services, see Solaris System Administration Guide, Volume 3.
