Configuring Message Waiting Indicator (MWI)

Use the Message Waiting Indicator (MWI) property page to configure MWI for a voice mail domain.

MWI allows subscribers to be alerted when messages meeting specified criteria arrive in their mailbox. Subscribers are alerted either by a lamp indicator on their phone, or an audible tone (stutter dial-tone) when they pick up the receiver. The indicator is cleared when the message is opened, or saved or deleted using the TUI. Subscribers can set up mailbox rules for using MWI in Subscriber Options.

Note: You enable MWI for individual mailboxes using your subscriber administration tool.

To display the Message Waiting Indicator property page

  1. In the Voice Mail System Configuration window, choose the voice mail domain.
  2. Select the Message Waiting Indicator property page.

To configure MWI properties

Complete the following fields on the Message Waiting Indicator properties page:

Enabling MWI

To enable a subscriber to use MWI you must select the Allow Message Waiting Indicator option for the subscriber’s mailbox in the subscriber administration tool.

Subscribers set up their own rules for using MWI in Subscriber Options by specifying values in the following rule description:

“If [message type] messages, with [importance], have arrived, set my message waiting indicator.”
