Details on Application Models

CNA provides six preconfigured application models:

Each has internal parameters that you can adjust according to the needs of your applications. In many cases, however, the application models provided do not require any changes and can be used with the default values.

Table 19 shows how the type of application influences your choice of application model when the measurement techniques you are using are traceprobe and ICMP.

NOTE: If you are using only TCP for your measurements, then you must use the Web or Other application model.

The method that you choose to use likely depends largely on what is convenient for your network infrastructure. Traceprobe and ICMP allow for greater accuracy of jitter and loss measurements than is possible with TCP. When using traceprobe and ICMP, the overall performance of the CNA system may show a slight to substantial increase, depending on the type of application in your particular network.

NOTE: If you use an application model that considers jitter, you should consider enabling auto-creation of subnets in the decision policy. By auto creating subnets, you minimize potential misinterpretation of differences in latency to different points in the same subnet as jitter. In many production contexts, this may involve the automatic creation of subnets up to a /32 degree of specificity.
