Remote administration
from outside an intranet firewall
|
This topic describes how to set up a PPP connection between the INTUITY
AUDIX LX and a remote PC to enable remote administration outside your
intranet firewall.
To set up a PPP connection for remote administration, complete the following
procedures in the order presented:
Setting up the sappp password and password aging
Note: The sappp password might have been set up
by the technician during the initial installation. Refer to your PPP
logins, passwords, and IP addresses form in your Installation
Guide for more information. If the sappp password and password
aging was set up during installation, continue with Connecting
and Activate the Modem. |
To set up the sappp password and password aging:
- At the console (using INTUITY AUDIX LX's shared monitor and keyboard),
login in as sa and set up a password for the sappp login. See Passwords
for information about how to set up a password.
- Set up password aging for the sappp password. See Setting
administrator password aging for more information.
- Continue with Connecting and activating the modem.
Connecting and activating the modem
Confirm that the modem is connected and administered properly for use
with the PPP connection by following these steps:
- Use the steps in Connecting the Modem
and then return to this page.
- Use the steps in Activate the Modem
and then return to this page.
- Continue with Setting up the PPP server configuration on the
INTUITY AUDIX LX.
Setting up the PPP server configuration on the
INTUITY AUDIX LX
Use this procedure to identify the local and remote IP addresses that
are required for remote access to the system.
To set up the PPP server configuration:
- Go to the Messaging Administration main menu and select .
The system displays the Configure Network Addressing page.
Note: The PPP server configuration might have
been set up by the technician during the initial installation. Refer
to your PPP logins, passwords, and IP addresses form in your Installation
Guide for more information. If the PPP server configuration
was set up during installation, continue with Setting up the PPP
connection on the remote machine. |
- Select IP addresses to use for the local and remote systems and enter
the addresses in the Local IP Address and Remote IP Address fields.
Note: When selecting IP addresses, choose addresses
that are next to one another, for example, xxx.xxx.xxx.1 for the
local IP address and xxx.xxx.xxx.2 for the remote IP address. |
- Click Save.
- Continue with the Setting up the PPP connection on the remote PC.
Setting up the PPP connection on the remote
PC
You must set up a PPP connection on the remote PC that you plan to use
for remote administration. This section does not describe in detail how
to set up a PPP connection on the remote machine because the process is
different for each operating system. However, you can use the following
information as a guide when setting up the PPP connection:
- You must know the sappp password that you set up in the Setting
up the sappp password and password aging procedure.
- You must know the phone number for the modem that you activated in
the Connecting and activating the modem procedure. In
addition, you may want to contact your switch administrator to see if
you need any access codes in addition to the phone number.
- Always request to show a terminal window. This allows you to use a
terminal window to log in with the sappp login and password. For example,
in Windows 2000, you would check the Show Terminal Window checkbox.
- Do not request that the system prompt for a name and password. For
example, in Windows 2000, verify that the Prompt for name and password,
certificate, etc. checkbox is not checked.
Once you have established the PPP connection, continue with Accessing
and logging in to the INTUITY AUDIX LX.
Accessing and logging in to the INTUITY AUDIX LX
Follow this procedure to access and log in to the INTUITY AUDIX LX using
the PPP connection that you just set up on your remote PC.
To access and log in to the INTUITY AUDIX LX:
- Using your remote PC, verify that your remote machine is connected
to your INTUITY AUDIX LX through the PPP connection.
- Open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape.
- In the web browser's address field, enter http://ipaddress.
where ipaddress is the local IP address that you set up
in Setting up the PPP server configuration on
the INTUITY AUDIX LX, for example, xxx.xxx.xxx.1.
- Press Enter.
The INTUITY AUDIX LX security notice page displays.
- Click Continue.
- Enter your login, for example, sa or vm, in the Username field and
click Login.
Note: Do not use the sappp login and password
to log in to the system. The sappp login and password are only
used to establish the PPP connection to the INTUITY AUDIX LX from
the remote PC. |
- Enter the password for your login in the Password field and click
Login.
The system logs you in and displays either the Messaging
Administration main menu or the AUDIX command
prompt screen, depending on the login you used.
Important! After you have successfully logged
in to the INTUITY AUDIX LX through a PPP connection, do not make
any changes to the Install Modem/Terminal Software page or the PPP
Server Configuration page. Changing the settings on these pages
could terminate your PPP connection. |
- When you are finished administering the INTUITY AUDIX LX, log off
the system and shut down the PPP connection on the remote PC. For information
about logging off of the system, see Logging
out of the INTUITY AUDIX LX.
