Backing Up System Files (Attended)

This topic contains the following information:

About the Attended Backup

Depending on the amount of user data on your INTUITY AUDIX LX system, an unattended backup might not save all data types. An unattended backup backs up all system data, and then backs up as much of the other data types as possible, as described in About the Partial Unattended Backup. Therefore, if a full unattended backup did not occur, you might want to run an attended backup to copy the data types that were not saved during the unattended backup process.

Note: The attended backup does not cause a degradation in service. However, for best results, perform an attended backup at a time when the INTUITY AUDIX system experiences low usage.

About the Data Types

You can manually back up any combination of the four data types at any time. The four data types are system data, announcements, INTUITY AUDIX names, and INTUITY AUDIX greetings and messages.

System Data

System data is automatically backed up nightly through the unattended backup. See The Types of Data That Are Backed Up for a list of the items included in system data. In addition to the unattended backup, you should perform an attended backup whenever you make extensive changes to subscriber profiles.

Announcements

Announcements are the prompts and phrases that guide the user through INTUITY AUDIX Voice Messaging. This data type does not require a backup unless the system has customized announcements that have just been changed. If customized announcements are not being used, a backup of announcements already exists on the original factory CD.

INTUITY AUDIX Names

The INTUITY AUDIX names data type contains voiced subscriber names. After additional subscriber names have been recorded, you should conduct an attended backup of this file system.

INTUITY AUDIX Greetings and Messages

INTUITY AUDIX voice messaging greetings include each subscriber's primary voice greeting, multiple personal greetings, automated attendant menus and messages, and bulletin board messages. INTUITY AUDIX voice messages are all of the call answer and voice mail messages that subscribers send and receive every day.

Performing an Attended Backup

Note: It is highly recommended that you stop the messaging software (voice system) before performing an attended backup. See Stopping the Messaging Software (Voice System) for more information.

To perform an attended backup:

  1. Stop the messaging software (voice system).
  2. From the Messaging Administration main menu select Backup.

The system displays the Backup page.

  3. For each data type that you want to back up, select Yes from the drop down list for that data type. Yes is the default setting for all data types.
  4. For each data type that you do not want to back up, select No from the drop down list for that data type.
  5. Label and insert a rewritable compact disc (DVD-RW) medium into the drive.

Note: The DVD-RW media used to back up the system must support a writing speed greater than 4x. If a backup is attempted using DVD-RW media that supports writing speeds less than or equal to 4x, for example, 1x–4x or 4x, the backup will fail.

  6. Click Save.

Note: If you are not performing the attended backup from the console, the system displays a warning message that states that leaving the Backup page will abort the backup. Click OK to acknowledge the warning message.

The system displays the SSH User Authentication dialog box.

  7. Enter your login, for example, sa or vm, in the User name field and your password in the Password field.

  8. Click Login.

  9. The system displays status information as it prepares for the backup and then displays the following message:

    ************************************************
    Please insert CD-RW number 1
    ************************************************
Press Enter to continue or ^C (Control C) to quit
  10. Press Enter.

Note: If the DVD-RW medium has been previously used to back up data, the system displays a warning message that states that there is existing data on the DVD-RW medium. Press Enter to continue with the backup.

  11. The system displays the following message:

    DVD-RW is ready for initialization
Determining which files to back up.
  12. After the system displays the number of DVDs that are required, press Enter.

The system then starts the backup and displays each file name that is backed up.

Note: An attended backup might require additional DVD-RW media. The system prompts when it is necessary to insert additional media.

  13. Do one of the following:

    • If additional backup media is needed, do the following:
      1. Remove the DVD-RW medium.
      2. Label a new DVD-RW medium with current date and type of backup data.
      3. Insert the new DVD-RW medium into the drive.
      4. Press Enter.
      5. Repeat step a through step step e if additional backup media is needed.
    • If no additional backup media is needed, continue with Step11.
  14. Verify that when the backup is finished, the system displays the following message:
  15. FULL/PARTIAL-MANUAL BACKUP completed successfully - day date time
  16. Remove the DVD-RW medium from the drive and insert a different DVD-RW medium into the drive before performing the next unattended backup.
