CPU Diagnostics

Accessing the CPU Diagnostics

This section describes how to test the platform by using the diagnostic commands. To begin testing:

  1. Insert the diagnostic diskette.
  2. Boot the system.
  3. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

  4. After choosing the appropriate test, use the following keystrokes to administer the test.

Exiting the CPU Diagnostics

Use the ESCAPE key to abort or end an in-progress test. It may take one or more minutes for longer tests to end, because the system is returned to a reasonable state after the test is aborted.

Most tests can be aborted. However, do not abort the surface scan test because of its potentially destructive nature.

Performing CPU and Coprocessor Diagnostics

Tests are performed on the CPU and coprocessor. C&T, Cyrix, and IIT refer to integrated circuit manufacturers.

To perform CPU and coprocessor diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Diagnostics
    CPU/Coprocessor

    The system displays the CPU and Coprocessor Diagnostics Selection Screen.

  4. Press ENTER.
  5. The system displays the CPU and Coprocessor Diagnostics Screen.

  6. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to highlight the individual tests.
  7. Use the SPACE bar to select a test.
     

    Note: A > next to a test means it has been selected and it will be performed.

  8. Press CONTROL + N.
  9. The system displays the CPU and Coprocessor Diagnostics Results Screen.

  10. Press ESCAPE.
  11. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Performing Memory Diagnostics

Diagnostics are performed on base, extended, and expanded memory, and upper memory (UMB) blocks. Memory diagnostics are divided into three categories:

Pattern and address tests are available as fast, medium and heavy.

To perform memory diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Diagnostics
    RAM Memory

    The system displays the Memory Diagnostics Selection Screen.

  4. Press ENTER.
  5. The system displays the Memory Diagnostics Screen.

  6. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to highlight the individual tests.
  7. Use the SPACE bar to select a test.
     

    Note: A > next to a test means it has been selected and it will be performed.

  8. Press CONTROL + N.
  9. The system displays the Memory Diagnostics Results Screen.

  10. Press ESCAPE.
  11. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Performing System Board Diagnostics

System board diagnostics are performed in the following areas:

To perform system board diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Diagnostics
    System Board

    The system displays the System Board Diagnostics Selection Screen.

  4. Press ENTER.
  5. The system displays the System Board Diagnostics Screen.

  6. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to highlight the individual tests.
  7. Use the SPACE bar to select a test.
     

    Note: A > next to a test means it has been selected and it will be performed.

  8. Press CONTROL + N.
  9. The system displays the System Board Diagnostics Results Screen.

  10. Press ESCAPE.
  11. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Performing Video Adapter Diagnostics

The video and monitor tests check the functionality of both the video adapter and the monitor. They operate with either a monochrome or a color system using popular monochrome, and VGA (video graphics array) and SVGA (super video graphics array) adapters, as well as monochrome and color analog, digital, and multiple scan frequency monitors. Tests include:

To perform video adapter diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Diagnostics
    Video Adapter

    The system displays the Video Adapter Diagnostics Selection Screen.

  4. Press ENTER.
  5. The system displays the Video Adapter Diagnostics Screen.

  6. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to highlight the individual tests.
  7. Use the SPACE bar to select a test.
     

    Note: A > next to a test means it has been selected and it will be performed.

  8. Press CONTROL + N.
  9. The system displays the Video Adapter Diagnostics Results Screen.

  10. Press ESCAPE.
  11. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Performing Serial Port Diagnostics

The serial port diagnostics check the internal functionality of the serial port controller chips, as well as the integrity of the drivers and connections to external serial devices. The RMB COM port is hidden for the platform diagnostics and cannot be tested. The diagnostics are performed on up to 4 adapters that have been identified by the BIOS. Tests include:

To perform serial port diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Diagnostics
    Serial Ports

    The system displays the Serial Port Diagnostics Selection Screen.

  4. Press ENTER.
  5. The system displays the Serial Port Diagnostics Screen.

  6. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to highlight the individual tests.
  7. Use the SPACE bar to select a test.

  8. Press CONTROL + N.
  9. The system displays the Serial Port Diagnostics Results Screen.

  10. Press ESCAPE.
  11. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Performing Parallel Port Diagnostics

Parallel port diagnostics verify the ability of the parallel ports to control a printer properly. The tests send various patterns of signals out of the port. The diagnostics are performed on up to 4 adapters that have been identified by the BIOS. diagnostics include:

To perform parallel port diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Diagnostics

  4. Press ENTER.
  5. The system displays the Parallel Port Diagnostics Screen.

  6. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to highlight the individual tests..

Performing Fixed Disk Diagnostics

Diagnostics performed on the hard drive include a surface scan for surface defects and the following:

To perform fixed disk diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:

    Fixed Disks

    The system displays the Fixed Disk Diagnostics Selection Screen.

  4. Press ENTER.
  5. The system displays the Fixed Disk Diagnostics Screen.

  6. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to highlight the individual tests..
  7. Use the SPACE bar to select a test.
     

    Note: A > next to a test means it has been selected and it will be performed.

  8. Press CONTROL + N.
  9. The system displays the Fixed Disk Diagnostics Results Screen.

  10. Press ESCAPE.
  11. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Performing Diskette Drive Diagnostics

These diagnostics verify that the floppy controller and drive function properly. They require the tester to insert a scratch diskette (DOS or UNIX formatted) prior to testing. Diagnostics include:

To perform diskette drive diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Diagnostics
    Diskette Drives

    The system displays the Diskette Drive Diagnostics Selection Screen.

  4. Press ENTER.
  5. The system displays the Diskette Drive Diagnostics Screen.

  6. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to highlight the individual tests..
  7. Use the SPACE bar to select a test.

Performing Other Drive Diagnostics

These diagnostics verify that the other SCSI drives function properly.

To perform other drive diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Diagnostics
    Diskette Drives

    The system displays the Other Drive Diagnostics Selection Screen.

  4. Press ENTER.
  5. The system displays the Other Drive Diagnostics Screen.

  6. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to highlight the individual tests..
  7. Use the SPACE bar to select a test.

Performing Video Adapter Character Sets Tests

To perform video adapter character sets tests:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Interactive Tests
    Video
    Character Sets

    The system displays the Video Adapter Character Sets Tests Screen.

  4. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to highlight the individual test.
  5. Press ENTER to start the test.
  6. Press ESCAPE to exit the test.
  7. The system displays the Video Adapter Tests Screen.

Performing Video Adapter Color Palettes Tests

To perform video adapter color palettes tests:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Interactive Tests
    Video
    Color Palettes

    The system displays the Video Adapter Color Palettes Tests Screen.

  4. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to highlight the individual test.
  5. Press ENTER to start the test.
  6. Press ESCAPE to exit the test.
  7. The system displays the Video Adapter Tests Screen.

Performing Video Adapter Monitor Quality Tests

To perform video adapter monitor quality tests:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Interactive Tests
    Video
    Monitor Quality

    The system displays the Video Adapter Monitor Quality Tests Screen.

  4. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to highlight the individual test.
  5. Press ENTER to start the test.
  6. Press ESCAPE to exit the test.

Performing Video Adapter VGA Functions Tests

To perform video adapter VGA functions tests:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Interactive Tests
    Video
    VGA Functions

    The system displays the Video Adapter VGA Functions Tests Screen.

  4. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to highlight the individual test.
  5. Press ENTER to start the test.
  6. Press ESCAPE to exit the test.
  7. The system displays the Video Adapter Tests Screen.

Performing an Internal Speaker Test

To perform an internal speaker test:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Interactive Tests
    Internal Speaker

    The system displays the Internal Speaker Test Screen.

  4. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to change the frequency of the test.
  5. Press ESCAPE to exit the speaker test.
  6. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Performing Diskette Tests

To perform diskette tests:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Interactive Tests
    Diskette

    The system displays the Diskette Tests Screen.

  4. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to highlight the individual test.
  5. Press ENTER to start the test.
  6. Press ESCAPE to exit the test.
  7. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Viewing System Configuration via CPU Diagnostics

To view system configuration via CPU diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Hardware Info
    System Configuration

    The system displays the several screens detailing the system configuration.

  4. Press ESCAPE to exit the system configuration screens.
  5. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Viewing Memory Contents via CPU Diagnostics

To view memory contents via CPU diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Hardware Info
    Memory Contents

    The system displays the several screens detailing:

  4. Press ESCAPE to exit the memory contents screens.
  5. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Viewing IRQ and DMA Use via CPU Diagnostics

To view IRQ and DMA use via CPU diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:

    IRQ and DMA Use

    The system displays the several screens detailing:

  4. Press ESCAPE to exit the IRQ and DMA use screens.

Viewing Device Drivers via CPU Diagnostics

To view device drivers via CPU diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:

    The system displays the several screens listing the device drivers used.

  4. Press ESCAPE to exit the device drivers screens.
  5. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Viewing COM and LPT Ports via CPU Diagnostics

To view COM and LPT ports via CPU diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Hardware Info
    COM and LPT Ports

    The system displays the several screens detailing:

  4. Press ESCAPE to exit the COM and LPT port screens.
  5. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Viewing Physical Disk Drives via CPU Diagnostics

To view physical disk drives via CPU diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Hardware Info
    Physical Disk Drives

    The system displays the several screens detailing the physical disk drives configuration.
     

    Note: This information might be incorrect in a RAID system.

  4. Press ESCAPE to exit the physical disk drives screens.
  5. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Viewing Logical Disk Drives via CPU Diagnostics


 


This option should not be used. It displays incorrect information.

Viewing VGA Information via CPU Diagnostics

To view VGA information via CPU diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Hardware Info
    VGA Information

    The system displays the several screens detailing the video circuit card information.

  4. Press ESCAPE to exit the VGA information screens.
  5. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Viewing Software Interrupts via CPU Diagnostics

To view system configuration via CPU diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Hardware Info
    Software Interrupts

    The system displays the several screens detailing the software interrupts used.

  4. Press ESCAPE to exit the software interrupt screens.
  5. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Viewing I/O Use via CPU Diagnostics

To view I/O use via CPU diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Hardware Info
    I/O Use

    The system displays the several screens detailing the system I/O use.

  4. Press ESCAPE to exit the I/O use screens.
  5. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Viewing PCI Information via CPU Diagnostics

To view PCI information via CPU diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Hardware Info
    PCI Information

    The system displays the several screens detailing:

  4. Press ESCAPE to exit the PCI information screens.
  5. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Accessing the DOS Shell via CPU Diagnostics

To access the DOS shell via CPU diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Utility
    DOS Shell

    The system displays the A:> prompt.

  4. Enter exit to exit the DOS shell.
  5. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.

Performing a Surface Scan of a Hard Disk Drive via CPU Diagnostics

To perform a surface scan of a hard disk drive via CPU diagnostics:

  1. Access the diagnostics.
  2. Place the cursor on:
  3. Utility
    Surface Scan Hard Disk Drive

    The system displays the Surface Scan Hard Disk Tests Screen.

  4. Use the UP arrow and the DOWN arrow keys to highlight the individual test.
  5. Press ENTER to start the test.
  6. Press ESCAPE to exit the test.
  7. The system displays the PC-Doctor Diagnostics Screen.
