Installing system software

To install the system software from the Avaya IR CD-ROM, which includes all of the Avaya IR software, follow the steps in the table in this section.

Note:
As of Release 1.2.1, the Sun operating system (OS) is no longer installed as part of the IR software installation process. Before installing this software, make sure that you have first installed the correct version of the Sun Solaris OS (version 8, update 8 or version 8, update 7).

This installation process adds the IR base packages, but not necessarily all of the packages required to make the system operational. When you complete this procedure, see Installing individual packages for information on how to install additional packages required by your system.

Approximate time required:

Platform

Time

Sun Blade 150:

30 minutes

Sun Fire 280R or V240 with Disk Mirroring enabled:

3 hours (includes hard disk synchronization for Disk Mirroring feature)

Note:
If you want to use the Disk Mirroring utility (AVdm), you must first verify that your system is partitioned correctly and that you have the Sun DiskSuite software installed on your system. For information about the required disk partitioning, see Disk Mirroring feature. For more information about the Sun DiskSuite software, see your Sun Solaris documentation.

Sun Fire 280R or V240 with no Disk Mirroring enabled:

30 minutes

Action

1

None

Verify that the system meets the minimum hardware and OS requirements for software installation (see Platform requirements).

If you are not sure whether you have the correct version of the OS installed, you can run the command: cat /etc/release To confirm that you have the correct OS installed, look for "Solaris 8." Unfortunately, there is no easy way to confirm the update, but you can obtain and install update 8 from Sun if you are not sure.

2

None

Insert the CD-ROM labeled Avaya IR R1.2.1 Installation and Upgrade CD 1 into the CD-ROM drive.

3

None

To start the installation, enter: /cdrom/cdrom#/avinstall
where the # in cdrom# indicates the drive number for the CD-ROM drive (normally 0).

4

The system installs the validation package (AVval) and runs it. This validation package checks to verify that the system has all the operating system software, patches, and hardware required to install the Avaya IR software.

If the system does not have all the requisite hardware and software installed, then the validation package records the errors to an error log, lists all errors on the screen, and aborts the installation process.

If the validation package does not find any deficiencies, then it proceeds to the next phase of the installation.

If the validation package aborts the process because you are missing one or more required elements, then you must address the deficiencies and restart the installation. You can find a list of the errors in the installation log at /var/sadm/install/logs/ivr_install.log.

If the validation script does not find any errors, no action is required at this point.

5

The system copies all optional package files to the /export/optional_features directory.

When finished, the installation script prompts you to insert the second CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and then press Enter when ready to proceed.

Insert the CD-ROM labeled Avaya IR R1.2.1 Installation and Upgrade CD 2 into the CD-ROM drive.

Press Enter.

6

The system installs the Avaya IR base packages and a number of Sun OS required companion packages. It also copies all base software package files to the /export/optional_features directory.

Note:
If necessary, these copies of the installation files can be used to re-install the Avaya IR software in cases where the original CDs are not available.

At the end of the installation and copying process, the installation script displays a prompt saying that the software installation is complete and prompting you to press Enter to reboot the system.

Press Enter.

7

The system reboots.

None

The steps in the table above describe the installation of only the base system software. If you want to use additional software, such as speech recognition software, Text-to-Speech, and other optional packages, you must install them separately, using the pkgadd command.

The use of some features is also controlled by licensing, using the RTU file. For more information, see The RTU file.
