Type of feature
The TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf) modem is an optional feature.
About the TDD modem feature
Although called a modem, the TDD modem might better be called a TDD recognizer. This is a software packageand not a hardware devicethat can be used in IVR applications to allow communications with the hearing-impaired, in compliance with Section 508 of the federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
The TDD modem acts much like a speech recognizer. It even uses the speech proxy server to communicate with the Avaya IR server. When the IR system receives a TDD tone, that tone is passed to the TDD modem software. The TDD software then uses a grammar-like algorithm to determine the corresponding DTMF tone, which it then returns to the IR system.
Hardware requirements
At least one digital telephony card must be installed and operational.
Software requirements
The TDD modem feature requires the following software:
Using this feature
Administer this feature using Web Administration (Feature Packages > Speech and DPR Administration > Administration) or the speech and sproxyadm commands.
This feature is used by voice applications on the Avaya IR system. Avaya recommends using Avaya IVR Designer to develop applications with TDD modem capabilities. For more information, see Avaya IVR Designer Help and the TDD installation documentation.
