Network Management (SNMP) feature

Type of feature

The Network Management (SNMP) feature is an optional feature.

About the Network Management (SNMP) feature

The Network Management feature allows customers to monitor and administer their IR systems remotely, using a network management system. It provides client-side service for Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) communications with network management servers using such service monitoring software as HP OpenView or Tivoli.

Hardware requirements

In addition to the Avaya IR hardware platform, this feature requires you to have a network management server and the appropriate LAN or other connections. Avaya does not provide any of these other hardware elements.

Software requirements

This feature requires the Network Management package (AVsnmp). For more information, see Network Management (SNMP) package.

It also requires the use of an SNMP network management software tool, such as HP OpenView or Tivoli.

Note:
Avaya has tested this feature against only these two SNMP software tools.

Using this feature

When designated alarms or severe errors occur on an IR system, this feature can be used to send alarm traps to the network management server using SNMP. The network management server then normally indicates that the IR server is in trouble using a graphical display of some kind.

This feature also allows the network management server to get and set administration data on the IR server. So, it is possible to perform IR system administration (or at least a subset of it) remotely, using the network management server as a remote access point.
