Using a double-byte database with VoiceXML

Consider the following information for VoiceXML applications that access double-byte information from a database. This feature provides the ability for VXML applications to receive double-byte characters and store the data in a supported database or perform any of the currently supported database commands. Use this feature and one of the supported databases when data may include double-byte characters, particularly with many non-Latin languages.

Supported databases

The database must be configured as UTF-8. Sybase and Informix access is not supported for double-byte processing. Sybase and Informix databases are supported for only single-byte processing.

The supported databases for double-byte processing with VoiceXML are:

• Oracle
  Oracle can be remotely or locally installed. When Oracle is installed locally on the Avaya IR, it may be configured to support UTF-8 data. However, since Avaya IR does not support language-based Sun OS installations, for example Japanese, you will not be able to view double-byte data with the local Oracle database.
• IBM DB2
• MS SQL

VoiceXML application and settings

Create the VoiceXML application in one of the following ways:

• Use IVR Designer. The IVR Designer software creates applications that support double-byte processing.
• Write the VoiceXML application directly. For double-byte languages, or for files that have double-byte characters, set the encoding attribute in the <xml> tag to UTF-16 or UTF-8. Then save the VoiceXML document with the same setting as the <xml> tag, either UTF-16 or UTF-8 respectively.
