Upgrading from Message Networking nm1.0-21.3

Use this procedure to upgrade the Message Networking system from version nm1.0-21.3. It is strongly recommended that you plan to do the upgrade during low usage hours.

Note: If you are not sure what version of the software is running, select Utilities > Software Management > Messaging System Software Display and check the version number of the audixcd line. This is the version of the Message Networking software running on your system.

Preparing for the upgrade

Before installing the new Message Networking software:

  1. Log in as craft.
  2. If the Message Networking system supports analog, record the type of switch connection software currently installed on the system. To do this:
    1. Start at the Administration main menu and select Utilities > Software Management > System Software Display.
    2. When the results displays, record the Switch integration type, either LANset or SWINset.
    3. Click Return to Main to return to the Administration main menu.
  3. Perform an attended backup of the system.

Warning: It is critical that you back up the Message Networking system before you proceed. If you do not back up your system, you will not be able to return the system to service after the upgrade.

    Notes:

    • An average of 10,000 subscribers with voice names can be stored per CD during an attended backup. Three CDs are provided with each Message Networking system. You might need to provide additional CDs for backup purposes depending on the number of subscribers on your system.
    • It takes approximately 20 minutes per CD to perform the backup.
    • The attended backup does not cause a degradation in service. However, for best results, perform an attended backup at a time when the Message Networking system experiences low usage.
    • The following data types can be backed up during an attended backup:

System data: System data is automatically backed up nightly through the unattended backup. See types of data that are backed up for a list of the items included in system data. In addition to the unattended backup, you should perform an attended backup whenever you make extensive changes to subscribers.

Voice names: The voice names data type contains voiced subscriber names. After additional subscriber names have been recorded, you should conduct an attended backup of this file system.

    1. Stop the messaging software (voice system).
    2. From the Administration menu, select Utilities > Backup and Restore > Backup.
The system displays the Backup page. For information about the fields on this page, click Help.
    3. Select the data types you want to back up:
      • For each data type that you want to back up, select Yes from the drop down list for that data type. Yes is the default setting for all data types.
      • For each data type that you do not want to back up, select No from the drop down list for that data type.
    4. Label and insert a rewritable compact disc (CD-RW) medium into the drive.
Note: You must use CD-RW media that can support a 10x backup.
    5. Click Save. Note: If you are not performing the attended backup from the console, the system displays a warning message that states that leaving the Backup page will abort the backup. Click OK to acknowledge the warning message.
The system displays the SSH User Authentication dialog box.
    6. Enter your login, for example, sa, in the User name field and your password in the Password field.

    7. Click Login.
Note: If you are performing the attended backup from the console, the system displays a warning message that states that leaving the Backup page will abort the backup. Click OK to acknowledge the warning message.

    8. The system displays status information as it prepares for the backup and then displays the following message:

      ************************************************
      Please insert CD-RW number 1
      ************************************************
Press Enter to continue or ^C (Control C) to quit
    9. Press Enter.

Note: If the CD-RW medium has been previously used to back up data, the system displays a warning message that states that there is existing data on the CD-RW medium. Press Enter to continue with the backup.
The system displays the following message:

      CD-RW is ready for initialization
Determining which files to back up.

The system then starts the backup and displays each file name that is backed up.

Note: An attended backup might require additional CD-RW media. The system prompts when it is necessary to insert additional media.

    10. Do one of the following:
      • If additional backup media is needed, do the following:
        1. Remove the CD-RW medium.
        2. Label a new CD-RW medium with the system name, current date, type of backup data, and the CD number.
        3. Insert the new CD-RW medium into the drive.
        4. Press Enter.
        5. Repeat Steps a through e if additional backup media is needed.
      • If no additional backup media is needed, continue with Stepj.
    11. Verify that when the backup is finished, the system displays the following message:
    12. FULL/PARTIAL-MANUAL BACKUP completed successfully | type of data backed up - day date time

    13. Remove the CD-RW medium from the drive and insert a different CD-RW medium into the drive before performing the next unattended backup.
    14. Click Return to Main to return to the Administration menu.

Upgrading from Message Networking 1.0-21.3

Complete the following steps to upgrade the Message Networking system.

To upgrade the Message Networking system:

  1. Insert the Message Networking software CD into the CD drive.
  2. Shut down the system:
    1. Start at the Administration menu, and select Utilities > Shutdown System.
The system displays the Shutdown System page.
    2. Enter a number between 0 and 600 in the Wait Time field.
This time designates how many seconds the system is to wait for calls in progress to finish before stopping the voice system. New calls are prevented immediately regardless of the wait time selected. If any calls are still in progress after this time, they are dropped, and the system proceeds with stopping the voice system. A wait time of zero indicates an indefinite wait time until all current calls are completed.
    3. Click Shutdown.
      The following message displays:
"This will bring down your system and you will lose access to this system. Are you sure you want to do this?"
    4. Click OK.
Some messages might appear as the system shuts down:
      "Stopping voice system...Shutting down system."
  3. When the message "Power down" displays, press the power button to turn the off the system, and then press the power button to turn the system back on.

As the machine starts up, you see an Avaya splash screen and then a screen that says "Welcome to Avaya Message Networking Server" with a boot: prompt.

  4. At the boot: prompt, type install, and press Enter.
  5. Wait 15 to 20 minutes for installation to complete.

The system displays the message "Please remove the Install CD from the CD drive and press <ENTER>."

  6. Remove the CD as soon as the drawer opens. If the door does not open automatically within two minutes, eject the CD manually. Do not leave the CD in the CD drive. Leaving the CD in the drive causes the system to boot from it again and installation to start over.
  7. Press Enter.
As the system boots up for the first time, a welcome message displays.
  8. Press Enter.
The system displays the Time Date Selection screen.
  9. Enter new time and date information as required:
    1. Press Tab to move the cursor to the Time Zone Selection.
