This topic provides information about the backup media used to
back up Message Networking data. This topic is organized as follows:
About the backup media
The backup media used depends on the Message Networking server
used:
- The S3210R and S3210 servers use a rewritable compact disc (CD-RW) media
to back up data. The CD-RW media used to back up data holds approximately
650MB of data. You must use CD-RW media that can support a 10x
backup. An average of 10,000 subscribers with voiced names can
be stored per CD during an attended backup. Three CDs are provided
with each Message Networking system. You might need to provide
additional CDs for backup purposes depending on the number of
subscribers on your system, up to 26 CDs for the maximum number
of subscribers supported on the S3210 server.
- The S3400-H uses a Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) Random Access
Memory (RAM) drive to back up data. One DVD-RAM holds approximately
4.7GB of data. An average of 70,000 subscribers with voiced names
can be stored per DVD during an attended backup. One DVD is provided
with each Message Networking system. You might need to provide
additional DVDs for backup purposes depending on the number of
subscribers on your system, up to 4 DVDs for the maximum number
of subscribers supported on the S3400-H server.
In the event of a system failure, the data stored on the media
is used to restore the Message Networking system to an operational
state.
Alternating the backup media
To ensure that acceptable backup data is available when needed,
do not use only one backup medium for attended and unattended backups.
It is recommended that you alternate between at least two media
for unattended backups. Additional media can be used to implement
a longer cycle. For example, you could alternate backups among seven
backup media, each one labeled with one day of the week.
After an unattended backup is complete or an attended backup medium
is full, label the backup media with the current date or day of
the week, depending on your backup cycle, along with the backup
data type. Then store the backup medium in a secure location. A
second backup medium must then be inserted into the drive in anticipation
for the next unattended backup or to complete an attended backup
if the attended backup requires more than one backup medium.
Replacing the backup media
It is recommended that you replace the backup CD-ROM every 12
months. When labeling a backup medium for the first time, write
the replacement date on the backup medium to help identify when
it needs to be replaced.
Viewing the contents of the backup
media
The following procedure explains how to view the contents of the
backup media.
To view the contents of the backup media:
- Start at the Administration menu,
and select Utilities > Backup and Restore >
View Attributes of Backup Media.
The system displays the View Attributes of Backup Media page,
which contains the following information:
- The backup medium number
- The name of the machine (server)
- The date and time of the backup
- A list of the data types that were backed up
- A list of the packages installed on the system at the time
of backup
-
Click Return to Main to return to the Administration menu.
Ejecting the backup media
To eject the backup media:
- Press the eject button on the front of the CD/DVD drive (on
the CD drive, this is the round button on the lower-right side
of the drive).
The system ejects the backup medium. If the backup medium
does not eject, do the following:
