SNMP alarm notification overview

You can administer Message Networking to perform alarm notification via SNMP to specified NMSs.

Types of Message Networking alarm notifications include:

  • Major alarm raised
  • Minor alarm raised
  • Warning alarm raised (secondary NMSs only)
  • Alarm resolved

There are two administration pages in Message Networking where you can administer NMSs for alarm notification via SNMP:

  • Alarm Management: The Alarm Management page supports alarm notification via SNMP or modem. If you specify SNMP as the alarm notification method, the NMS you specify as the Network Management Station on the Alarm Management page is referred to as the primary NMS. The Primary NMS can receive major and minor alarms only.

Message Networking can be configured to accept an acknowledgement from the primary NMS.

  • SNMP NMS Administration for Alarms: This page allows you to administer additional NMSs to receive alarm notification. Each NMS you administer on the SNMP NMS Administration for Alarms page is referred to as a secondary NMS. Secondary NMSs can receive varying levels of alarm and event notifications, but cannot acknowledge receipt of alarms and events (unlike the primary NMS, which can provide acknowledgement). You can administer secondary NMSs even if you do not administer Alarm Management to send notification via SNMP.

See Administering SNMP for information on the steps you must complete to administer NMSs for alarms on the Message Networking system.
