Testing the operation of Email (Internet Messaging)

After Email (Internet Messaging) has been administered on your Avaya™ S3400 Message Server, run the following tests to confirm that all network connections are established and that the feature is operating properly.

To test the operation of Internet Messaging:

  1. Start at the Messaging Administration main menu and select:
  2. Feature Administration
         Internet Messaging
              System Control & System Status

The system displays the System Control & System Status page.

  3. Check the Internet Messaging status field. The status should be Running.
  4. Click Next at the bottom of the screen.
  5. The system displays the Tests menu.

Note: For an explanation of how to run the test or of the test results, click Help button at the bottom of each Internet Messaging web-based administration page.

  6. Run the Ping test for all of the network routers, the S3400 server, and mail gateway. Test each host name or IP address.
  7. This test checks whether this and another system have physical connectivity and that each interface is running.

  8. Run the Name Server Lookup test for the S3400 and mail gateway. Test each host name or IP address. Use the name format of hostname.domain. For example, use the name s3400.avaya.com, not just s3400.
  9. This test determines whether a system can be looked up through the domain name servers assigned on the TCP/IP Networking screen. If domains can be looked up, messages can be delivered to them.

  10. Run the SMTP Connection test for the S3400 and mail gateway. Test each host name or IP address.
  11. This test validates the mail protocol connection between this S3400 and another machine.

  12. Run the POP3 Connection test for the S3400. Test each host name or IP address.
  13. This test calls a network host using TCP/IP to determine whether the host's POP3 interface is running. If the connection works, POP3 communication through Internet Messaging is working.

  14. Run the IMAP4 Connection test for the S3400. Test each host name or IP address.

This test calls a network host using TCP/IP to determine whether the host's IMAP4 interface is running. If the connection works, POP3 communication through Internet Messaging is working.

  15. Run the Mail Delivery test for a known S3400 extension and password, and a valid email address.
  16. This test validates whether the mail system is functioning by sending a message through the S3400 system to an existing extension. Go to the extension and verify that the test message was delivered.

  17. Return to the Internet Messaging main menu by clicking Back in the web browser twice.
  18. From the Internet Messaging main menu, select:

    Internet Messaging Logs

  19. The system displays the Internet Messaging Logs.

  20. Check each log for the messaging status in each delivery process.
