The Avaya S3400 Message Server uses Internet standard networking
protocols for message transport and subscriber directory updates.
The S3400 supports the SMTP/MIME protocol for message transport
and supports the LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) protocol
to communicate with other networked S3400 and Avaya Message
Networking systems. See Overview of the Avaya
Message Networking system for more information about the Message
Networking system.
Message transport using SMTP/MIME
The SMTP/MIME protocol has the following message-transport features:
- The ability to create and send multimedia messages to any Internet/Intranet
mailbox having an address of the form user@domain.
- The ability to receive any message sent from an Internet/Intranet
originator. Originators designate S3400 destination mailboxes
using addresses of the [email protected].
- The ability to transport messages to and from Internet/Intranet
domains. Multimedia message components, such as voice, fax text,
and binary media types are transported in MIME format.
The S3400's support of the SMTP/MIME protocol has the following
benefits:
- Uses standard, non-proprietary protocols.
- Leverages the flexibility of MIME regarding message content.
- Allows messages to be transported natively, without transcoding.
- Allows subscribers to send messages via the Internet to email
users.
- Increases subscriber choices for message access to include industry-standard
email platforms.
- Provides cost saving to customers by allowing message transport
using shared existing Internet facilities.
Subscriber directory updates using LDAP
The LDAP protocol provides an open interface to add, change, delete,
and query directories between two systems. LDAP on the S3400 supports
the following subscriber directory functionality:
- Accepts requests for changes in the local subscriber directory,
including additions, changes, and deletions.
- Initiates requests for a remote subscriber update from an administered
remote machine.
- Accepts requests from administered remote machines for an update
of local subscribers.
- Authenticates both incoming and outgoing update sessions.
For more information about the LDAP directory, see LDAP
directory.
